Box Score STANDISH, Maine – In their final conference matchup before the postseason tournament, the men's lacrosse team headed to the home field of the St. Joseph's (Maine) Monks for a competitive game that would claim seed positions. The Cadets walked away with the 11-7 victory under their belts and advance to a 5-2 conference record, earning them a home game in the quarterfinal round on Tuesday.
Sophomore Arron Canarelli and freshman Ian Thomas collected hat tricks in their final regular season game, while freshmen Marco Wiederaenders and Joey Ditommaso both scored a pair and sophomore Judd Baggett found the back of the net on one attempt.
In net, freshman Mark Paradiso earned the big win by protecting the pipes with eight saves.
Saint Joseph's (Maine) jumped to a 2-0 lead, but the Cadets were undeterred as Canarelli and Wiederaenders soon tied it up within the first five minutes of action. Back-to-back goals by Canarelli early in the second quarter gave the Cadets their first lead of the game, as they soon held a 4-3 advantage over the home team.
The Monks answered back with two goals of their own to regain control on their turf, but Wiederaenders found the back of the net on a pass from Ian Thomas to tie the game at 5-all before the end of the half.
Whatever was said in the locker room at halftime lit a fire under the Cadets, as they came out and scored four straight goals to dominate the play in the third quarter. Ian Thomas started it off with a goal of his own after having assisted the tying efforts, as he and Ditommaso alternated goals in the scoring run.
The Monks were only able to tally two more goals in their final regular season game, one at the end of the third and one to start off the fourth quarter, but the Cadets finished strong as Baggett and Thomas tallied the last two points of the game.
Norwich finishes the regular season with an overall record of 7-4 and 5-2 in the conference. They have earned the third seed in the standings, giving them home field advantage on Tuesday for the quarterfinal round.
