NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich men's
lacrosse team built upon their recent shutout of Rivier and put
away Daniel Webster College, 20-4, on Howard Field Thursday
afternoon. Despite the cold wind and April snow showers, the Cadets
came out ready to compete and will advance to a 6-4 overall record,
4-2 in the conference.
Senior Tyler Woods and sophomore Joe
Galante each netted four goals apiece, as Galante tallied
three assists and Woods came up with one helper.
Freshman Ian Mendoza recorded his first collegiate hat trick,
while senior Tyler Nicoll, sophomore Arron
Canarelli and freshman Ian Thomas each
put up a goal and an assist.
Freshman Andrew Dustin thrived in the snowy
conditions with a goal, three assists, and the game-high 10 ground
balls, while also causing three turnovers. In between the pipes for
the Cadets, junior Nathan Proctor made four saves
and bumped his season record up to 6-5 in net.
For Daniel Webster, Antonio Polson and Alex McKenzie were the
only Eagles successful at getting past Proctor, as they tallied two
goals each. Justin Chiulli and Kieran Kavanaugh each assisted on
McKenzie's efforts.
The Norwich Cadets outworked their opponents on all fronts,
outshooting the Eagles 59-16, picking up 53 ground balls to Daniel
Webster's 28, winning 22-of-28 face-offs, and successfully
building from the back with 14 good clears on 15 attempts.
The Cadets were looking at another shutout opportunity after the
first quarter, holding a 5-0 advantage as Nicoll put Norwich on the
board late in the first round on a unassisted effort.
Daniel Webster took away the donut with Polson's first
goal of the game, but Canarelli, freshman Joey
Ditommaso, and Mendoza would round out the scoring in that
quarter, as the board read 8-1 at the half.
The Eagles took the field at the start of the half and beat
Norwich to the net; their lone goal of the third period coming from
Polson once again.
The Cadets, however, went on a run in the third period, scoring
seven unanswered goals on their visitors. The third round's
attack was driven by Galante's offensive efforts, as he
netted two goals and assisted Canarelli, Woods, and Mendoza on
theirs.
With the home team sitting with a 13-point advantage, McKenzie
doubled the Eagles' scoring. Five different Cadets players
earned their final tallies in the last round, including
Mendoza's hat trick goal, Galante's fourth goal and
seventh point of the game, and snipers by senior Patrick
Sikora, Dustin and Woods.
The Eagles never let up, however, as goalie Nate Burr set aside
11 of the Cadets' shots on goal.
Norwich is currently tied 4-2 in the conference with St.
Joseph's (Maine), who they'll face in their next GNAC
matchup on Saturday at 1 p.m. on the Monks home field. The game
will wrap up the regular season schedule for conference play, as
the playoff bracket will be released later that evening.
