NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich men's tennis team
picked up its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference win of the
season with a 6-3 victory over Johnson & Wales on Saturday
afternoon at Shapiro Fieldhouse.
The Cadets (4-4, 1-2 GNAC) won all three doubles matches to take
an early 3-0 lead and then they split the six singles matches to
down the Wildcats.
Junior Collin Hyte (7-1) won his sixth straight
singles match in a row by downing Jesse Wils at first singles 6-0,
6-1. Freshman Christian Hoskey (6-1) picked up his
fifth straight win at second singles by sweeping Todd Zimmerman
6-0, 6-0. The dynamic duo also teamed up to take first doubles 8-5
over Zimmerman and Drew Pontillo.
Senior Luis Galvez and Michael
Settle teamed up to win second doubles 8-4 and Settle beat
John Sepowitz 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 to win his fourth straight match.
Joseph Dvorak and Brandon
Carver beat Brian Martens and James Klapper at third
doubles 8-4, but both fell in their respective singles matches.
Pontillo beat Dvorak 6-4, 6-4, while Carver lost to Chris Cummings
6-2, 6-2.
Galvez lost to Nick Simon 6-2, 7-5 at third singles to round out
the matches.
Norwich will look to extend its unbeaten streak on Thursday when
the Cadets travel to Lyndon State for their final non-conference
match of the season. They will then return home on Saturday for
their regular season finale against Albertus Magnus.
Saturday's match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
With a win on Saturday, the Cadets will clinch third place in
the GNAC and will then travel to Emerson for the GNAC Tournament
semifinals.
