SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Joe Macchi scored a
game-high four goals and Joe Heney added two goals and a game-high
three assists as Springfield College defeated Norwich University,
21-2, in a Pilgrim League men's lacrosse contest on a
beautiful Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.
The victory snaps a three-game losing skid for Springfield, and
boosts the Pride's record to 3-4 (1-0 Pilgrim) The Cadets,
who have dropped two straight games, fall to 3-3 (0-1 Pilgrim).
The Pride dominated the game from the opening whistle. For the
game, Springfield outshot Norwich, 68-8, and the Pride held a 57-36
advantage in ground balls. Springfield also had a great day in the
face-off “X” as it won 18-of-26 draws. Springfield
poured in the game's first five goals to take command of the
contest.
Norwich scored its lone goal of the first half with 1:52
remaining in the opening period as Patrick Sikora fired home a goal
after dodging free at the top of the box.
Austin Orsini scored Springfield's final goal of the
opening 15 minutes with 18 seconds remaining as the Pride owned a
6-1 lead following the first quarter of play.
The Pride continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter
as it pumped in five unanswered goals to go into halftime with an
11-1 lead.
Springfield scored 10 unanswered goals to start the second half
as it netted five goals in both the third and fourth quarters.
Kyle Marzeoti closed out the scoring as he netted
Norwich's only second half marker with just over two minutes
to play in regulation.
Norwich goalkeeper Nathan Proctor made 23 saves in the contest
despite giving up 21 goals for the Cadets. Matt Cipolla made all
three of Springfield's saves as he was one of three goalies
to see action in the game.
Evan Buss won 13-of-20 faceoffs and scooped up seven ground
balls off the bench for Springfield, while Mark Eaton went 5-of-6
on draws with six ground balls.
The Cadets will return to action on Tuesday, April 6, when they
travel up to Portland, Maine, to battle Husson University in a
non-league game. Faceoff for the contest is set for 5 p.m.
