CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Dan Piedmont scored a
game-high four goals, including the game-winning marker with three
seconds to play in the first overtime period, to help lead the MIT
men's lacrosse team to an 8-7 victory over Norwich University
in a Pilgrim League contest Wednesday afternoon at Roberts Field.
Corey Garvey added two goals and one assist for the Engineers,
who improve to 7-6 (3-3 Pilgrim). Garvey netted the game-tying goal
midway through the fourth quarter to send the see-saw game into
overtime.
Carl Tilbury chipped in one goal and one assist for the
Engineers, while John Kucharczyk scored one goal. Gabe Blanchet,
Tom Hay and Alex Andrzejewski each added one assist apiece to round
out the scoring for MIT.
Jesse Mattson led Norwich (8-7, 1-5 Pilgrim) with three goals
and one assist. Michael White potted two goals, while Joe Galante
and Kyle Marzeoti each added one goal apiece. Justin Pearson dished
out one assist to cap the scoring for the Cadets, who have dropped
four straight games.
First quarter goals by Piedmont and Tilbury gave MIT a 2-0 lead
less than six minutes into the contest, but Mattson's tallied
his first marker of the game late in the stanza to trim the
Engineers' advantage to 2-1 following the opening stanza.
Piedmont struck again early in the second quarter, but three
straight goals by Norwich helped the Cadets take a 4-3 lead into
halftime. Marzeoti began the run with his 23rd goal of the year,
and White scored a pair of goals within a span of two minutes to
cap the spurt.
Mattson extended NU's edge to 5-3 less than two minutes
into the second half, but goals by Garvey and Kucharczyk tied the
score with 4:54 to play in the third quarter. Norwich reclaimed the
lead less than two minutes later as Mattson completed his hat
trick. Piedmont rounded out the third quarter scoring with a man-up
goal with 1:54 remaining in the stanza, sending the game to the
final quarter deadlocked at 6-6.
Galante scored early in the fourth quarter to give the Cadets a
7-6 advantage, but Garvey netted the equalizer with 11:14 to play.
Piedmont then scored the game-winning goal in the closing
moments of the overtime, taking a pass from Andrzejewski and
beating Norwich goalkeeper Nathan Proctor with three seconds
showing on the clock.
Proctor (5-6) finished with 11 saves in the losing effort, while
Christopher Rullan (7-6) stopped seven shots to pick up the victory
in the MIT cage.
Both teams fired 32 shots in the game, while Norwich held a
37-31 edge in ground balls. White led NU with eight shots, while
Patrick Sikora scooped up a game-high six ground balls. The Cadets
also won 12-of-19 faceoffs, with Marzeoti going 10-of-16 in the
“X”.
Norwich will close out its 2010 campaign on Saturday, May 1,
when the Cadets host Pilgrim League rival Wheaton College at Howard
Field. The opening faceoff for the Senior Day contest is slated for
1 p.m.
