Men's Tennis: Norwich Advances To GNAC Tournament With 8-1 Win At Albertus Magnus

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Norwich University men's tennis team punched its ticket to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament on Sunday afternoon as the Cadets defeated Albertus Magnus College, 8-1, in the league finale for both squads.

NU won all three doubles points and then took five of the six singles matches to earn the victory and advance to the league's postseason tournament.

The Cadets (6-3, 1-3 GNAC) will be seeded fourth in the event, and they will draw top-seeded Suffolk University in a semifinal matchup on Thursday, April 22, at 3 p.m., inside the Winchester Indoor Tennis Club. Norwich and Suffolk met on Saturday, April 17, with the Rams securing an 8-1 victory in Northfield, Vt.

Norwich began today's match strong, winning all three doubles matches by a combined score of 24-3. Collin Hyte and Fritz Kaelber earned an 8-2 win at first doubles, improving their record to 6-1 on the season. Logan O'Neill and Graham Oliveira picked up an 8-0 victory at second doubles, while the tandem of Travis Tyler and Chris Pashley took an 8-1 decision at third doubles. Pashley and Tyler are now 6-2 when paired together in doubles this spring.

Hyte and Kaelber continued their dominance in singles action as they both secured straight sets victories at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. Hyte improves to 8-0 at first singles, while Kaelber is now 7-0 at No. 2 singles.

Oliveira, Tyler and Pashley all earned singles wins as well, earning victories at Nos. 4, 5 and 6, respectively. Tyler improves to 6-3 on the year, while Pashley's singles mark moves to 6-2.

Timothy Gabbard picked up the lone point for Albertus Magnus (2-10, 0-4 GNAC) with a straight sets victory over O'Neill at No. 3 singles.

Norwich will wrap up its regular season schedule on Tuesday, April 20, when the Cadets travel to Lyndonville, Vt., to battle Lyndon State College at 3:30 p.m. Norwich will then have one day to get ready for its GNAC Tournament semifinal contest at Suffolk on Thursday, April 22.
