BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. –
Kyle Marzeoti netted four goals to lift Norwich University to a
10-8 victory over Massachusetts Maritime in a Pilgrim League
men's lacrosse contest Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors
Stadium.
The victory, Norwich's third in a row, snaps a 34-game
Pilgrim League losing streak and improves the Cadets record to 6-3
(1-1 Pilgrim). The six victories this season are the most for the
program since the 2004 squad went 6-7.
Marzeoti tallied twice in the opening 15 minutes of play to help
stake the visiting Cadets to a 3-1 first quarter advantage. Tyler
Nicoll's man-up marker just 1:45 into the second stanza
extended NU's lead to 4-1.
Michael Lambros scored a man-up goal for MMA less than three
minutes later to help the host Buccaneers (1-8, 0-2 Pilgrim) slice
their deficit in half, but Joe Galante's goal with nine
seconds remaining in the first half gave Norwich a 5-2 lead at the
intermission.
Man-up markers off the sticks of Marzeoti and Michael White, and
even-strength tallies by Marzeoti and Jesse Mattson helped give the
visitors a 9-5 advantage heading into the final quarter of play,
but Massachusetts Maritime received a pair of goals from Will
Doucette that sandwiched a tally by Connor Burke that allowed the
hosts to storm back to within one at 9-8 with 6:50 to play in the
contest. Galante provided a key insurance goal for the Cadets with
4:25 remaining to close out the scoring. Norwich controlled the
clock in the closing minutes to earn the victory.
White added a pair of assists to go with his goal to finish with
three points in the win for the Cadets, who also received two
markers off the stick of Mattson. Nathaniel Davis, Justin Pearson,
Nick Talcott and Tyler Woods all posted single assists to round out
the scoring for Norwich.
Burke finished with a hat trick and a pair of assists in the
setback for the Buccaneers, who also received a pair of tallies
from Kyle Lersch and Doucette. Kevin Flanigan chipped in an assist
to round out the scoring for Massachusetts Maritime.
Caleb Fournier (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win in goal
with an eight-save effort for Norwich, while James Hitchings (1-8)
made 18 stops in net for Massachusetts Maritime.
The Cadets outshot the Buccaneers by a 35-30 margin, and NU won
12-of-22 faceoffs. Norwich scored four man-up goals on 11
opportunities, while the Buccaneers were 1-for-3 in those
situations.
Norwich will step away from its Pilgrim League slate on Tuesday,
April 13, when the Cadets host in-state rival Johnson State College
at Howard Field. The opening faceoff for the non-conference clash
is scheduled for 4 p.m.
