PAXTON, Mass. - Freshman A Joe Galante scored a
game-high three goals and dished out two assists, and fellow
freshman attackman Michael White added two goals and one helper as
the Norwich University men's lacrosse team opened its 2010 campaign
with a 10-6 victory over Anna Maria College on Saturday afternoon.
Norwich (1-0) also got two goals from senior Justin Pearson and
one apiece from senior Kyle Marzeoti and juniors Tyler Nicoll and
Patrick Sikora. Senior M Jesse Mattson chipped in a game-high three
assists for the Cadets.
Junior GK Ryan Leroux turned aside 16 of the 22 shots that he
faced to pick up the win between the pipes.
Galante and White scored first quarter goals 10 seconds apart to
give the Cadets a 2-0 advantage after the initial 15 minutes. The
Cadets netted the first two goals of the second quarter as White
scored off a feed from Mattson, before then assisting on Galante's
second goal of the game.
Anna Maria (0-2) finally got on the board with 5:27 to play
before halftime as Luke Biggins scored his first of two goals.
Norwich answered as Galante scored his third marker of the first
half with 2:27 to play to help the Cadets carry a 5-2 lead into the
intermission.
Both teams scored three goals apiece during an entertaining
third quarter, which ended with Norwich holding an 8-5 advantage.
Marzeoti, Sikora and Pearson all scored for the Cadets as the teams
alternated goals throughout the period.
Biggins notched his second goal of the contest early in the
fourth quarter to help the AMCATS pull to within 8-6, but Norwich's
defense held the hosts off the scoreboard the rest of the way to
secure the win. Nicoll and Pearson scored fourth quarter goals to
round out the scoring.
Anna Maria outshot Norwich 48-41 in the game. The AMCATS also
won 11-of-18 faceoffs.
Norwich will return to action on Thursday, March 11, when the
Cadets travel to Dartmouth, Mass., to take on UMass-Dartmouth in a
non-league contest at 4 p.m.
