CASTLETON, Vt. – Craig MacDerment scored
the game-winning goal with 53 seconds remaining in the first
overtime to propel Castleton State College to a 10-9 win over
Norwich University in non-conference men's lacrosse action
Wednesday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.
MacDerment received a crossing pass from Jake Rick, and
deposited his second goal of the game into the lower right-hand
corner of the net to deliver the Spartans (3-3) the victory.
MacDerment and Nohea King led Castleton with a pair of goals,
while Michael Martinez added one goal and three assists. Korey
Counous, Daniel Luzzi, Alexandre Brands, Michael DelDotto and
Kenneth Bourneuf each tallied single goals to round out the Spartan
scoring.
Joe Galante led the Cadets (3-2) with three goals and one
assist, while Kyle Marzeoti added two goals and one assist. Jesse
Mattson had two goals, Michael White one goal and one assist, and
Patrick Sikora one goal to round out the Cadets in the scoring
column.
Norwich jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Galante's first goal,
but Castleton reeled off the next three goals and the Spartans did
not trail the rest of the way. Norwich did not make it easy
however, cutting the lead to 5-4 at halftime on two late second
quarter goals from Mattson and Galante.
Castleton opened up a 9-6 lead with 10:49 remaining in the
fourth quarter on King's second goal of the game, but the
Cadets ended the period by scoring three unanswered markers to send
the game into overtime. Goals from Marzeoti and Galante cut the
Castleton lead to 9-8, but with 1:19 a Norwich penalty gave
Castleton the man-advantage for a full minute. Castleton turned the
ball over in its attack zone, and Norwich raced to the other end to
set up its offense. The Spartans were able to cause a turnover to
regain possession, but White was able to cause a turnover, scoop up
the ground ball and score with 22 seconds remaining to force the
extra session.
Norwich's Justin Pearson nearly scored the game winner
from the ground early in the overtime period, but David DeGhetto
made the save from point blank range to help set up
MacDerment's heroics.
DeGhetto finished with 12 saves, as did Norwich goalkeeper
Nathan Proctor. Castleton held a distinct advantage in the faceoff
circle, winning 16-of-22 to bolster the Spartan possession.
MacDerment had a game-high 10 ground balls, while Rick chipped in
with eight.
Proctor led the Cadets with six ground balls and three caused
turnovers, coming out of his crease on numerous occasions to aid
the defense.
The Cadets will open their Pilgrim League schedule on Saturday,
April 3, when they travel to Springfield, Mass., to battle
perennial powerhouse Springfield College. Faceoff for the
conference clash is set for 1 p.m.
