NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University
men's tennis team got back on the winning track Tuesday
afternoon as the Cadets defeated visiting Johnson State College,
8-1, at Shapiro Field House. Norwich swept the three doubles
matches, and took five of the six singles points to secure the
victory.
Norwich (2-1) had little trouble in winning all three doubles
points. Collin Hyte and Fritz Kaelber teamed up to earn an 8-0
victory at No. 1 doubles, Graham Oliviera and Logan O'Neill
picked up an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles and Travis Tyler and Chris
Pashley secured an 8-0 verdict at third doubles.
“We played great doubles tennis today,” said
Norwich head coach Kyle Dezotell. “We've been working hard on
specific parts of the game particularly important to doubles play,
and it was nice to see the hard work pay off for the team.”
The Cadets continued to cruise in singles play as Hyte won his
third straight singles match with a 6-0, 6-3 victory at the top
spot. Kaelber moved to 3-0 in singles play as well with a 6-2, 6-0
triumph at No. 2 singles. O'Neill (6-3, 6-2), Travis (6-0,
6-0) and Dennis Ortiz (6-3, 6-1) coasted to straight-set victories
at Nos. 3, 4 and 6, respectively.
Johnson State (1-2) earned its only point of the match at No. 5
singles as Kyle Young beat Michael Settle, 6-2, 6-4.
“It was great to be able to get some of the younger guys
like Michael Settle and Dennis Ortiz collegiate experience,”
added Dezotell.
Norwich will return to action on Thursday, April 1, when the
Cadets travel to Castleton, Vt., for a non-league match against
Castleton State College. First serve is slated for 4 p.m.
