Men's Tennis: Norwich Trips Castleton State, 6-3

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's tennis team lifted the lid on its 2010 campaign Wednesday afternoon with a 6-3 victory over Castleton State College at Shapiro Field House. The Spartans won two of the three doubles points, but the Cadets took five of the six singles matches to secure the victory.

“It is always positive to begin any season with a victory,” said Norwich head coach Kyle Dezotell. “It was important to our players to beat Castleton after they took a pair of 5-4 matches from us last year. A healthy in-state rivalry has definitely begun.”

Sam Levine and Greg Klopfer rallied to defeat Collin Hyte and Travis Tyler, 9-7, at No.1 doubles to give Castleton State the early lead. Kevin Eisenberg and Corey Kimball teamed up to beat Graham Oliveira and Chris Pashley, 8-3, at third doubles as Castleton State (0-1) carried a 2-1 advantage into the singles competition. Fritz Kaelber and Matt Sanford picked up NU's lone victory in doubles play as the tandem defeated Justin Garritt and Eric Slosek, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles.

Norwich (1-0) dominated singles play, though, winning five of the six matches to take the win. Hyte began the Cadets' dominance with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Levine at the No. 1 spot. Kaelber, who made an impressive debut with the Cadets, then posted a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Garritt at No. 2 singles. Sanford outlasted Eisenberg at No. 3 singles, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-4, to put Norwich in front 4-2.

Klopfer, who was the only Spartan to post two victories on the day, picked up a 6-3, 7-5 win over Oliveira at No. 4 singles to close the gap to 4-3, but the Cadets won the final two singles matches to seal the deal. Tyler earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Slosek at No. 5 singles, while Pashley secured a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kimball at sixth singles.

“Our doubles play was erratic as can be expected this early in the season, but our singles play was quite consistent and patient,” added Dezotell. “We will need to greatly improve our doubles play to be competitive in the GNAC when we return from spring break in two weeks.”

Norwich returns to action on Saturday, March 27, when the Cadets travel to Providence, R.I., to battle Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent Johnson & Wales University at 1 p.m.
