SOMERVILLE, Mass. - The Norwich University
men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw versus Great Northeast
Athletic Conference (GNAC) rival Suffolk University on Saturday
evening. The Cadets move to 3-2-1 (1-0-1 GNAC) on the season, while
the Rams move to 3-0-2 (0-0-2 GNAC).
Norwich senior D Chris Rivet scored his first career goal
with 1:54 remaining in the first half as he beat the Suffolk
defense and ripped a shot past Suffolk GK Jack DeJesus to put
the Cadets up 1-0.
Suffolk's Nick Celia scored the Rams' lone goal in the game in
the 56th minute off a feed from David Best to tie the game at 1-1
early in the second half.
Neither team could push across another goal over the final 34
minutes of regulation, or in either of the 10-minute overtime
periods.
Both squads had opportunities to win in overtime, though.
Celia almost struck with the game-winner in the first overtime
after making several moves past the Cadets' defense but his shot
clanged off the crossbar. Norwich had its best opportunity with two
minutes left in the second overtime session when the Cadets were
awarded a free kick on a Rams' foul. But junior M Roger Motaze's
shot sailed high over the wall of defenders and over the net.
Both teams had five shots apiece in the overtime periods, while
Norwich outshot the Rams in the game, 24-18.
DeJesus made 10 saves in the game to push his record to 3-0-2,
while Norwich senior GK Charles Maxwell (3-2-1) stopped eight
shots.
Norwich steps out of conference play on Wednesday, Sept. 23,
when the Cadets host in-state rival Middlebury College at Howard
Field. Kickoff between the two long-time rivals is slated for 4:30
p.m. A live videostreamed broadcast of the match will be available
