JOHNSON, Vt. - The Norwich University men's
tennis team wrapped up its 2009 season in style on Wednesday
afternoon by convincingly defeating in-state rival Johnson State
College, 9-0, in a non-league match.
The Cadets (6-6) won all three doubles matches, and took each of
the six singles points en route to the victory.
Senior Peter Hooper closed his superb NU career in style with a
6-0, 6-0 victory over Ryan Joy at No. 1 singles. The two-time GNAC
"Player of the Year" also teamed with freshman Collin Hyte for a
8-0 victory over Joy and Kyle Young at first doubles.
Hooper finishes his two-year Norwich career with an overall
singles record of 20-2, playing exclusively at the No. 1 spot. The
Spartanburg, S.C., product also went 19-4 at No. 1 doubles over his
two years. He earned first-team All-GNAC honors both years and was
named the conference's "Player of the Year" both years as well.
Hyte defeated Ben Algar, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles. Graham
Oliveira got past Alen Turan at third singles, 6-2, 6-4, while
Travis Tyler beat Young, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4 singles. Chris Pashley
cruised past Peter LeBlanc, 6-0, 6-1, at fifth singles, while Brad
Hollingsworth downed Jonathan Wilson, 6-2, 6-4, at sixth singles.
Tyler and Pashley teamed up to down Algar and Turan at No. 2
doubles, 8-5. Hollingsworth and Oliveira, meanwhile, took an 8-1
decision from LeBlanc and Wilson at third doubles.
Johnson State finishes its season with an overall record of
2-11.
