Wrestling: Norwich Goes 2-2 At New England Duals

BRISTOL, R.I. - The Norwich University wrestling team finished 11th out of 15 schools at the New England Duals on Sunday. The Cadets beat MIT and Trinity, but lost to Roger Williams and WPI.

The first match of the day for the Cadets came against Roger Williams, and they lost 25-9. John DaSilva got NU off to a good start, pinning Mike Trayser in 4:48 in the 125-pound bout. The Cadets were only able to win one more bout, though, as Connor Keating took a 5-4 decision from Kyle Rogers in the 157-pound matchup.

Norwich bounced back in its next dual match, taking care of MIT by the score of 30-21. Three Cadets chalked up pins to lead the way for NU. At 149 pounds, Nick Monaco pinned Ismal Olea in 1:00. Keating followed that up with by pinning Hank Peppe in 5:40 in the 157-pound bout. Clayton Brittingham then pinned Mike Gerhardt in 57 seconds in the 165-pound matchup. Jake Ferguson (174 pounds) and Jordan Ferguson (184) picked up wins by forfeit to round out the list of winners in that match.

The Cadets fell to WPI, 22-15, in their third match of the day. Brittingham earned his second pin of the day, pinning Jeff Root in just 37 seconds in the 165-pound bout. DaSilva took a 9-4 decision from Dan Metcalf at 125 pounds, Josh Bolduc earned a 5-0 win over Stephen Poppa at 133 pounds and Ray Gauthier bested Joe Vanni, 8-5, at 174 pounds.

Norwich won its final match of the day, defeating Trinity, 28-16. Six Cadets earned victories, led by Matt Valnoski's pin of Alexander Schreiber in the 165-pound bout. Keating added a technical fall victory over Richard Curtain at 157 pounds. Jake Ferguson picked up a major decision win over Chukwuemeka Kanu at 184 pounds. Monaco earned a major decision verdict in his match versus Nick Stewart at 149 pounds. Gauthier rounded out NU's list of winners against Trinity, as he was awarded a win via forfeit at 174 pounds.

Norwich (3-8) will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 24, when the Cadets host MIT, Bridgewater State, Plymouth State and Williams at Plumley Armory in a four-way meet beginning at 12 p.m.
