NORTHFIELD, Vt. - For the third straight week,
Norwich sophomore men's tennis standout Peter Hooper was selected
as the GNAC "Player of the Week" following two more dominating
performances last week.
Hooper, who is fast becoming one of the top players in the
league, went 2-0 at No. 1 singles last week. The Spartansburg,
S.C., was tremendous in both matches, dropping just one game in
four sets. On Thursday, Hooper dispatched Colby-Sawyer's Justin
Tardif, 6-1, 6-0. Then, on Saturday, he blanked Albertus Magnus'
Bobby Leonzo, 6-0, 6-0.
Hooper also forged a 2-0 mark at No. 1 doubles. He teamed with
fellow sophomore Matt Sanford to defeat Colby-Sawyer's Ben Dabush
and Ryan Murray, 8-3. In the conference clash versus Albertus
Magnus, the duo of Hooper and Sanford shutout the Falcons' tandem
of Leonzo and Tom Eckert, 8-0.
As a team, Norwich went 1-1 last week, falling to Colby-Sawyer,
7-2, before bouncing back to defeat GNAC foe Albertus Magnus, 7-2.
For the season, Hooper has authored a perfect 5-0 mark at first
singles, while also compiling an impressive 4-1 record at first
doubles.
The Cadets (3-2, 1-1 GNAC) will step out of conference play on
Tuesday when they travel to Castleton, Vt., to take on in-state
rival Castleton State at 4 p.m. The Cadets defeated the Spartans,
5-4, earlier this season in a hard-fought match in Northfield.
