WORCESTER, Mass. - David Turner and Clayton
Brittingham each pinned their opponents, and five other Cadets won
bouts as the Norwich University wrestling team picked up a 37-18
victory over Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon.
The Cadets (1-2) took a quick 6-0 lead as Ray Gauthier won by
forfeit at 174 pounds. Jake Ferguson followed with an 18-6 major
decision victory over Brendan Smith at 184 pounds to put the Cadets
on top, 10-0. Another win by forfeit at 197 pounds gave NU a
commanding 16-0 lead after three weights.
Following an RPI pin in the heavyweight bout, John DaSilva
earned an 8-5 decision at 125 and Norwich led 19-6 at the midway
point of the match. Another RPI pin in the 133-pound bout drew the
Engineers to within 19-12. The Cadets put the match away though
with another forfeit at 141 pounds, and Turner's pin of Donald
Gillespie at 149 pounds.
RPI earned another pin in the 157-pound match, but Brittingham's
pin of Aaron Asch in the 165-pound bout put it away.
Norwich will return to the mats on Sunday, Jan. 4, when the
Cadets travel to Bristol, R.I., to compete in the Scott Viera
Invitational.
