SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Clayton Brittingham placed
runner-up at 165 pounds, and John DaSilva and Jake Ferguson each
wrestled well to lead the Norwich University wrestling team at the
Doug Parker Invitational on Saturday.
The Cadets amassed 50 points to tie for 13th place out of 17
teams. The United States Merchant Marine Academy won the event with
135 points. Tournament host Springfield College placed runner-up
with 124.50 points.
Brittingham went 4-1 at 165 pounds en route to his second-place
finish. He defeated Springfield's Christopher Perry, 3-2, in the
semifinals before falling to USMMA's Vincent Renault, 10-5, in the
title bout.
NU head coach Rich Hasenfus was very impressed with the way
Brittingham wrestled throughout the day.
"This was Clayton's biggest tournament since he's been at
Norwich," said Hasenfus. "I think today's result will give him a
great deal of confidence as he continues on this season. I couldn't
be more proud of him. He wrestled extremely well today."
DaSilva put forth a strong effort in the 133-pound bracket,
going 3-2 on the day. In his first match, DaSilva beat Trinity's
Dean Stratouly before falling into the consolation bracket. Once
there, he reeled off two more wins, including a pin, before
eventually losing a second time.
Ferguson, meanwhile, won his first three matches in the
174-pound draw before dropping his last two to finish 3-2 for the
day. He started with a commanding 17-4 win over Springfield's Dean
Brady. Then, after a 3-2 win over Jordan Chacon of Stevens,
Ferguson pinned Williams' Mike Mara in 4:29.
"I thought the team wrestled well overall today," said Hasenfus.
"I was happy with how our guys bounced back after a disappointing
effort against Plymouth State earlier in the week. We are all
looking forward to building on this performance when we get back to
work after the Thanksgiving holiday."
Norwich will close out the first semester on Saturday, Dec. 6,
when the Cadets travel to take on WPI in a dual meet. The
contest is slated to get under way at 2 p.m.
