NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Husson scored twice in a span
of 1 minute, 59 seconds midway through the second half en route to
a 2-0 victory over Norwich in an NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament
first round game Thursday afternoon at a cold and rainy Howard
Field.
The Eagles scored their first goal at the 58:35 mark when Megan
Lajoie corralled Shelby Bradford's corner kick and beat Norwich
goalkeeper Alecia Wright. Wright had come out to play Bradford's
corner kick, but the ball slipped through her hands, giving Lajoie
a golden opportunity that she converted.
Husson (16-4-0) struck again less than two minutes later when
Michelle Manning took the ball near midfield and weaved around
several Norwich defenders before beating Wright with a hard shot
from close range at the 60:34 mark.
Husson had an opportunity to make it 3-0 at one point, hitting
the crossbar later in the frame. Wright did a good job of keeping
the Eagles off the scoreboard the rest of the way as well, as she
made all five of her saves in the second half.
Norwich (15-5-2) had a number of scoring chances in the second
half as well. The Cadets' best opportunity belonged to Meghan
Hoskins, who unleashed a rocket of a shot right into the arms of
Husson goalkeeper Tatyana Wolterbeek.
The first half went back and forth with both teams generating
scoring chances. The best chance belonged to Husson, as Bradford
ripped a hard shot off the crossbar midway through the opening
stanza.
Husson outshot Norwich, 20-9, and the Eagles held a 6-5 edge in
corner kicks. Wolterbeek finished with four saves to earn the
victory in the Husson goal.
"It was a tough loss today," said Norwich head coach Tyler
Renad. "The momentum really went their way after they tallied the
first goal. With that said, we played some of the best soccer I
have seen us play over the past three months.
"The difference in this match was that Husson capitalized on its
opportunities and we did not. This result does not take anything
away from our young ladies, They played their hearts out, and they
should be very proud of being GNAC regular season champions, GNAC
Tournament champions and NCAA Tournament participants.
"I think it is also important to thank the fine student body we
have here at Norwich. Their support kept us going through these
tough and tight contests. I also want to extend a great
thanks to the administration of Norwich, in particular President
Schneider, General Kelley, Paula Gills, Steve Looke, Rob Moylon,
Mike Yesalonia and Tony Mariano, along with our fine
coaches on staff here. Their constant support and
encouragement made this season a possibility and in the end a
reality.
"Finally, I need to thank my assistant coach Lauren Pacelli and
men's soccer coach Kyle Dezotell. We created a wonderful bond
this season and Kyle's young men are nothing short of quality
student-athletes, who have embodied his philosophy and
represented this fine university with
class. Coach Pacelli has proven herself as a great coach
and I sincerely hope she will remain for another season."
