LYNDONVILLE, Vt. - Darren Roberge's goal at the
102:01 mark of double overtime propelled the Lyndon State College
men's soccer team to a stunning 2-1 victory over previously
unbeaten Norwich University.
The Hornets improve to 5-5, while the Cadets fall to 10-1-1.
Norwich opened the scoring in the sixth minute when senior
forward Drew Dilley took a pass from fellow senior Ryan Boyton, and
raced into the left side of the penalty area and ripped a shot into
the lower left corner of the net behind LSC goalkeeper Jeff Giroux.
The Cadets maintained their one-goal advantage throughout most
of the first half, and had a few solid opportunities to extend the
lead, but Kyle Hessler's goal off a direct kick with 2:23 left
before intermission knotted the score at 1-1 and gave the Hornets
some much-needed momentum.
Norwich dominated play for most of the second half, but Lyndon
State continued to hold off the Cadets behind a solid defensive
effort led by Giroux and sweeper Matt Scagnelli.
After a scoreless 10-minute sudden-death overtime period, the
Hornets sealed the upset on Roberge's tally early in second
overtime. After Scagnelli took possession of a loose ball outside
the LSC penalty area, he drilled a 50-meter pass down the center of
the field to Roberge, who was stride-for-stride with a Norwich
defender.
Roberge was able to fend off the defender long enough to tap the
ball into the center of the net and over sprawled NU goalkeeper
Brian Riopelle for the game winner.
Giroux stopped 10 shots to get the victory, his third of the
season, while Riopelle collected one save in the loss. The Cadets
outshot Lyndon by a margin of 28-13.
"You have to give Lyndon a lot of credit," said Norwich head
coach Kyle Dezotell. "They worked incredibly hard, and their desire
to win this game was far greater than ours. Their team
defending and goalkeeping was outstanding, and they fully-deserved
this result because of the effort and enthusiasm they put
forth."
"In reality, the loss does not mean a lot. Hopefully it
will provide a valuable learning tool in that we need to be focused
every game we play as teams are going to bring their best effort
against us. Conference play is the most important thing for
us, and we are still unbeaten in the GNAC. We now get the
chance to bounce back in a huge conference match against Mount
Ida."
Norwich returns to its conference slate on Saturday, Oct. 11,
when the Cadets host GNAC rival Mount Ida at Howard Field. Kickoff
is scheduled for 3 p.m.
