MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Middlebury's Brooks Farrar
scored his first career goal with 43 seconds left in double
overtime to lift the Panthers to a 2-1 win over Norwich in a
non-league men's soccer game Wednesday afternoon.
Norwich (13-2-1) struck first in the 13th minute as senior
forward Ryan Boyton broke in all alone. Middlebury keeper Brian
Bush came out to meet Boyton, as the ball squirted to the right
where Boyton was able to find the back of the net for his
team-leading 16th tally of the year.
Middlebury (9-1-1) had a great chance to tie the game in the
23rd minute when Tyler Macnee was denied on a breakaway by Norwich
junior goalkeeper Charles Maxwell. The Cadets had a golden
opportunity for a two-goal lead later in the half, but Middlebury
defender Corey Moffat cleared the ball away as it was heading
towards the goal line.
The Panthers tied the game just 2 minutes, 33 seconds into the
second half as Macnee took a crossing feed from Farrar and scored
his 10th goal of the season with a blast to the right side.
Farrar nearly gave Middlebury the lead in the 56th minute, as
his shot caromed off the crossbar. The Panthers continued to
dominate the second half, holding a 12-2 shot advantage in shots,
but could not take the lead as Maxwell stood tall in the NU net.
Middlebury's Micah Wood had a great chance in the last minute of
the first overtime, as his header hit the crossbar and sailed over
the goal. Neither team could find the back of the net in the second
overtime, until Farrar's game-winner in the 109th minute.
Maxwell ended the day with eight saves, while Bush was credited
with three stops for the Panthers.
"The team played great today," said Norwich head coach Kyle
Dezotell. "We are disappointed to lose in the last minute of double
overtime, but we got just about all we could have out of the team.
It was a strange game in which both teams dealt with a lot of
injuries, and being a non-conference match we both erred on the
side of caution with some of our players. Some of our usual role
players stepped into major roles and played great for us. We played
over 80 of the 110 minutes without both of our starting central
midfielders (Jake Yaris and Roger Motaze) due to injuries they
picked up in the first half. To do as well as we did, with all
things considered, was a huge positive for us.
"It wasn't a dirty game by any means, but for most of the second
half we had a substitute forward playing right back, and our entire
starting midfield four on the bench with injuries. I was
really proud of how the players handled this adversity, and played
confidently and tried to win the game. All of these things
considered, it was a fantastic performance that we can build upon
as we head into our crucial final GNAC match at Emmanuel on
Saturday."
Norwich wraps up its regular season on Saturday, Oct. 25, when
the Cadets travel to Boston for a GNAC match versus Emmanuel.
Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
