NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Senior forward Ryan Boyton
scored the game-winning goal midway through the second overtime, as
the Norwich University men's soccer team defeated visiting Mount
Ida, 2-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match Saturday
afternoon at Howard Field.
The Cadets, who have not lost a regular season conference game
since the 2006 campaign, improve to 11-1-1 (5-0-1 GNAC). The
Mustangs, meanwhile, fall to 6-4-3 (3-2 GNAC).
Senior forward Drew Dilley put the Cadets in front, 1-0, in the
ninth minute, taking a pass from Boyton and beating Mount Ida
goalkeeper Kevin DosSantos at the 8:02 mark.
Mount Ida tallied the equalizing goal in the 79th minute as Matt
Gill registered an unassisted goal at the 78:20 mark.
Neither team was able to break the tie until the 105th minute
when Boyton took a pass from junior forward Jake Yaris and battled
through a triple team to tally the game winner.
"Ryan Boyton has scored a lot of big goals for us this year, and
that was definitely a big one for us," said Norwich head coach Kyle
Dezotell. "I think it was good for our guys to pull out a close
game in overtime, after losing in overtime on Wednesday. To have a
senior score the game-winning goal in on Senior Day is pretty
special.
"This senior class is arguably the best senior class in Norwich
history. We're going to graduate a lot of goals, assists and points
after this season, in addition to the contributions that we have
gotten on defense from Kyle Przekaza and Jason Grupp. This senior
class is about as good as it gets in Division III."
NU outshot Mount Ida, 23-13, and the Cadets held a 7-2 edge in
corner kicks. Each team accumulated 20 fouls in the physical
contest, which also included four yellow cards.
Norwich junior goalkeeper Charles Maxwell made five saves en
route to the victory. DosSantos made 10 saves for the Mustangs in
the losing effort.
Norwich returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 15, when the Cadets
travel to Boston, to take on GNAC opponent Emerson at 5:30 p.m.
