ITHACA, N.Y. - Chris Rideout placed fourth and
Matt Gauthier placed sixth to lead the Norwich wrestling team to a
14th-place finish at the Ithaca Invitational this past weekend. The
Cadets racked up 40.5 points and finished ahead of Coast Guard in
the 15-team field.
Wrestling at 197 pounds, Rideout compiled a 5-2 record with a
pair of pins. The freshman opened the tournament with a pair of
victories before falling to the consolation bracket. Rideout ripped
off three straight wins, including his two wins by fall, to reach
the consolation final. Although he dropped a 17-5 major decision in
his final bout, Rideout's fourth-place finish was NU's highest of
the weekend.
Gauthier also posted a 5-3 mark with one pin at 133 pounds. The
freshman opened with a win by fall, before falling into the
consolation bracket. Gauthier then reeled off four straight
victories to reach the consolation semifinals before dropping two
straight and settling for sixth place.
It marked the first time under NU head coach Rich Hasenfus that
two freshmen placed.
Norwich will return to the mat on Saturday, Nov. 10, when the
Cadets travel to Bristol, R.I., to participate in the Roger
Williams Invitational.
