BARRE, Vt. – The Norwich University men's golf team picked up a 6-5 match play victory over New England College Sunday at the Country Club of Barre, earning a hard-fought win over the Pilgrims on its home course just a week before the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championships on the same course.
The Cadets were led by Cooper Bertrand (Caledon, Ont.), who cruised to a 5&4 victory in his match to set the tone for Norwich. Bertrand's victory added another strong individual performance to his impressive fall season after recently finishing second at the Battle of Boston.
Harrison Giambattista (Danielson, Conn.) battled to a tie in his match, while Jake Kavanagh (Kirkland, Quebec) also finished his matchup all square as the Cadets continued to battle throughout the lineup.
Norwich picked up another point from Braden Camire (Saco, Maine), who earned a 1UP victory in a closely contested match. JD Mahoney (Ellicott City, Md.) followed with a 2&1 victory, giving the Cadets another important point in the team result.
Sami Molu (Toronto, Ont.) added another Norwich victory, defeating his opponent 3&2, before Jackson Jagemann (Montpelier, Vt.) closed out his match with an impressive 8&7 victory.
The Cadets' depth proved critical throughout the match, as Norwich secured the 6-5 team victory despite several tightly contested matchups.
The victory comes one day after Norwich placed third at the Battle of Boston, where Bertrand led the Cadets with a second-place individual finish at +2 and Kavanagh finished tied for fourth at +5.
Norwich will return to the course Tuesday, Sept. 29, when the Cadets travel to Keene State for their next match play competition leading up to GNAC Championships at the Country Club of Barre.
