PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Norwich women's ice hockey extended its remarkable run of weekly accolades as first-year defenseman
Maggie Hunter (Royal Oak, Mich.) earned both Little East Conference (LEC) Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week honors for the week ending Feb. 15. The recognition marks the seventh consecutive LEC Player of the Week award for the Cadets.
Hunter delivered an electric two-way performance from the blue line, totaling five points in Norwich's weekend sweep of UMass Boston. She opened Friday's contest with a three-point effort, scoring two goals — including the game-winner — and adding an assist. The first-year blueliner followed up with another strong outing Saturday, recording an assist and a second game-winning goal to cap a dominant weekend.
On the defensive end, Hunter helped anchor a Norwich unit that limited UMass Boston to just one goal across the series, holding the Beacons scoreless at even strength.
Hunter currently ranks first in the LEC in points by a defenseman, is tied for first in goals among defensemen, and leads the conference in assists by both a defenseman and a freshman. She also ranks second among all first-year players in points, trailing only teammate
Geena Cookinham (Gilmanton, N.H.).
The award marks Hunter's second consecutive weekly honor and her third of the season, all previously as Rookie of the Week. This is her first career Player of the Week recognition.
Norwich will look to close the regular season on a high note when the Cadets host Plymouth State on Feb. 20 and 21 in the final weekend series of the regular season.
