NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's swimming & diving team made a statement in their first head-to-head meet of the season on Saturday afternoon, powering past Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Regis College, 148-68, to open a three-meet homestand in commanding fashion at Goodyear Pool.
The Cadets tallied 10 victories across the 13-event state, highlighted by multi-win afternoons from
Drew Bylow (Monroe, Mich.),
Kristian Adlianitski (Cheshire, Conn.), and
Andrew Clark (Acworth, Ga.).Â
Adrian Riendeau (Ridgecrest, Calif.) and
John Connor Hallstrom (Bethany, Conn.) also chipped in with individual wins, helping Norwich control the meet from start to finish.
Norwich set the tone immediately in the 200-yard medley relay, where the quartet of Bylow, Adlianitski, Clark, and Riendeau raced to a 1:39.64 finish, topping the field by over 13 seconds. From there, Hallstrom opened the individual competition with a wire-to-wire performance in the 1000 freestyle, touching in 10:45.22 to win by more than a minute.
The Cadets dominated the mid-meet stretch, stringing together victories in the 200 free, 50 free, 200 IM, 100 fly, and 100 free. Bylow and Adlianitski each secured their second wins of the afternoon, while Riendeau clocked in at 2:08.41 to take the 200 IM.
Clark added a pair of wins of his own in the 100 fly (54.01) and 500 free (5:12.62), as Norwich continued to pull away on the scoreboard. Regis managed victories in the 100 breaststroke and both diving events, but the Cadets remained in control throughout the second half of the meet.
Norwich capped the day with another relay triumph in the 400 freestyle, as
Alex Sulyma (Warwick, R.I.),
Gabe Wettig (Ballston Spa, N.Y.), Hallstrom, and
Gunnar Steward (Staunton, Va.) combined for a 3:23.56 effort, holding off Regis by more than two seconds.
"What an exciting meet to have for our home opening meet," said Head Coach
Jennifer Cournoyer. "Regis has some strong competitors who really pushed us, but it was outstanding to see former swimmer Kaylin Creel excelling as an assistant coach. We are getting a feeling for where our men will be most valuable but they all came to race."
The men's victory helped complete a Saturday sweep over Regis in Goodyear Pool, as the Norwich women's team also secured a dominant win in the day's opening dual.
