ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Norwich University men's and women's swimming & diving teams concluded the 2022-23 season with impressive showings against premier competition at the three-day 2023 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Open Championships, hosted between Friday, Feb. 24 and Sunday, Feb. 26.
The Norwich men earned an 11th-place spot among 21 teams, while the Cadet women finished 19th out of 23 participating institutions. Both teams competed and topped fellow Div. III schools as well as Div. I and Div. II foes, including Manhattan College, George Washington University, and Rider University.
The Cadets opened up competition on both sides in the 200 yard freestyle relay, with
Nikky Avise (Owens Cross Roads, Ala.),
Deanna Parot (San Diego, Calif.),
Jenna Tschida (Goffstown, N.H.), and
Hannah Shaner (Gilbertsville, Pa.) leading the way for the women, before the quadruplet of
Martin Adlianitski (Cheshire, Conn.),
Will Thompson (Downington, Pa.),
Michael Cowenhoven (Fairfield, Conn.), and
Benjamin Stark (Montverde, Fla.) helped the men finish 11th.
Avise paced the Cadets in a highly competitive 50 yard freestyle field, while
Jack Brennan (Hopkinton, Mass.) and
Aidan Grady (Sandwich, Mass.) participated in the 1 meter dive against Div. I competition.
A relay team consisting of
Adrian Riendeau (Ridgecrest, Calif.), Thompson,
Nikita Ponomarenko (Mariupol, Ukraine), and Adlianitski placed ninth in the 400 yard medley relay, before
Reilly Laitala (Sterling, Mass.) competed in the 1 meter dive in women's action. Riendeau, Thompson, Ponamarenko, and Stark saw action in the 200 yard medley relay.
Stark impressed in the 400 yard IM with a 4:08.40 effort, while Stark, Riendeau, Cowenhoven, and Adlianitski finished in the top 10 in the 800 yard freestyle relay. Adlianitski posted a 16:30.62 time in the 1650 yard freestyle.
Adlianitski, Thompson, Cowenhoven, and Stark topped Div. I competition in the 400 yard freestyle relay, clocking a 3:11.38, ahead of Manhattan College and Saint Peter's University.
The 2023 ECAC Championships were wildly successful for the Cadets, both from a team and an individual perspective. Among several broken team records, Adlianitski broke a 41-year old school record in the 200 free, surpassing Palmer Lewis's 1:43.51 with a 1:41.84 time.
"Attending the ECAC Open Championship was a terrific way to close the 2022-2023 season," said Head Coach
Jennifer Cournoyer. "The excitement and push from the team produced a continuation of breaking both individual and relay school records. The fact that we have begun to rewrite our record board entirely is exciting. We all learned a great deal, and competing with such talented competitors inspires us to continue elevating our competitiveness. The student-athletes performed the accomplishments, but our families, friends, and alums' support have been crucial to our success. It was an unforgettable weekend."
