Swimming & Diving: Cadet men finish second, women third at SUNY Potsdam's North Country Invitational

RESULTS

POTSDAM, N.Y. -
The Norwich University men's and women's swimming & diving teams held firm at their previous positions in SUNY Potsdam's North Country Invitational, with the men's team checking in at second-place while the women's team finished in third on the final day of the two-day event on Saturday afternoon.

Picking up from event 20, the women's and men's 200 yard medley relay teams clocked in with second-place finishes, before Benjamin Stark (Montverde, Fla.) got the ball rolling for the Cadets in the 1650 yard freestyle, posting a 17:17.55 time to give Norwich its first individual victory of the day.  John Connor Hallstrom (Woodbridge, Conn.) finished just 16 seconds after to come in second.

Aidan Grady (Sandwich, Mass.) replicated his success from day one, claiming the top spot in three-meter diving competition with a 165.55 score, just 4.5 points better than the runner-up diver from Saint Michael's College.

The individual victories continued to roll in for Norwich, with Nikky Avise (Owens Cross Roads, Ala.) securing the women's first individual win with a 53.69 time in the 100 yard freestyle, followed right behind by Hannah Shaner (Gilbertsville, Pa.).  Stark would scoop up his second win in the 200 yard butterfly, courtesy of a 200 yard butterfly.

Adrian Riendeau (Ridgecrest, Calif.) and Shaner would close out Norwich's individual efforts, picking up back-to-back wins in events 34 and 35.  Riendeau claimed the 100 yard backstroke with a strong 55.38, while Shaner impressed in a 2:02.57 effort in the 200 yard freestyle.

"What a great way to go into the Thanksgiving Break.  Over the two day event we learned a lot about what we need to do moving forward in the season, along with it being quality time as a team," Head Coach Jennifer Cournoyer said.  "On the second day we had many quality swim performances on the board but it wasn't enough to capture a strong St. Mike's team, even though the men took first place in four of the eight individual events.  The women had a big day with Nikky and Hannah going 1-2 in the 100 free followed by Hannah taking first in the 200 free."

The Norwich men's team finished in second place with a 474.5 score, comfortably ahead of Clarkson University but behind Saint Michael's.  The women, meanwhile, sat sandwiched in third-place, with a dominant edge over SUNY Oswego but trailed both Saint Michael's and Clarkson.

Both the Norwich men's and women's swimming & diving teams will return to action after Thanksgiving break, turning the page to December for a Dec. 3 date at Saint Michael's.  Start time for the dual meet is set for 11:00 a.m.
