Women's Swimming & Diving: Norwich claws past Panthers, four Cadets notch multiple solo victories

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University women's swimming & diving team secured another dominant victory in dual meet action, toppling Plymouth State University, 204-69, at the PSU Natatorium on Saturday afternoon.

The Cadets claimed first-place finishes in 13 of 16 events, with Brandy Lewis (Strafford, Vt.) racking up the most individual wins with three, posting a 2:28.41 in the 200-yard IM, a 5:46.73 in the 500-yard freestyle, and a 1:09.50 in the 100-yard IM.  She closed her day with a relay victory as the first-leg swimmer in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Maria Piekarczyk (Dudley, Mass.) and Alannah Kelliher (Middleboro, Mass.) also collected multiple solo victories.  Piekarczyk swam a 2:42.23 in the 200-yard butterfly and a 30.17 in the 50-yard butterfly, while Kelliher touched the wall in 26.99 in the 50-yard freestyle and in 35.66 in the 50-yard breaststroke.  Both Piekarczyk and Kelliher also swam as part of the first-place 200-yard medley relay team, while Kelliher was the final leg of the first-place 200-yard freestyle relay team.

Reilly Laitala (Sterling, Mass.) topped the competition in a pair of diving events, first logging a 221.70 score in 1-meter diving, before taking to 3-meter diving and earning a 221.92 final score.

Jenna Tschida (Goffstown, N.H.) and Abbey Houghton (Dover, N.H.) rounded out the Cadets who recorded solo victories, claiming the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard breaststroke, respectively.  Tschida also swam the third leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that closed the meet with a win.

In addition, Deanna Parot (San Diego, Calif.) was a part of two first-place relay teams, while Kylie Farris (Leander, Texas) swam the opening leg of the 200-yard medley relay team that began the day with a victory.

Lewis, Parot, Tschida, and Kelliher comprised the 200-yard freestyle relay team that closed the meet with a 1:49.61 effort to capture first by over 11 seconds.

LEADERS: The Cadets close head-to-head action with a 5-1 record.  A select group of swimmers will participate in the two-day Middlebury Invitational in Middlebury, Vt., over Friday, Jan. 31, and Saturday, Feb. 1.  Norwich, with hopes of defending back-to-back conference titles, will then turn its attention to the three-day Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships, hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) from Feb. 7 through Feb. 9.
