Women's Hockey: McGovern, Conway power Norwich past Trinity, 7-1

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's ice hockey team picked up right where it left off from the first semester with a dominant 7-1 victory over Trinity (Conn.) on Wednesday night in non-conference action.

Sophomore forward Sophie McGovern (Hermantown, Minn.) scored a natural hat trick to lead the top-ranked Cadets to the victory in their first game in nearly a month.

McGovern scored the first three goals of the game, all off assists from sophomore line mate Amanda Conway (Methuen, Mass.) to build up a 3-0 lead before Trinity could get on the board near the midway point of the second period.

The Cadets (11-0-1, 6-0-0 NEHC) rallied to score the final four goals after Trinity (2-6-0, 0-4-0 NESCAC) cut into the deficit at the 7:05 mark of the second period.

McGovern led Norwich with three goals and an assist, while Conway set a new single-game career high with a goal and four assists for five points.

Alyssa Hulst (Scarborough, Maine), Bryn Labbe (Calgary, Alberta) and Sarah Schwenzfeier (Hingham, Mass.) each scored a goal as well as Norwich's potent offense increased to 5.83 goals per game to rank third in the country.

After Caroline Howell, scored at the 7:05 mark of the second period, Hulst scored her 10th goal of the season just 50 seconds later. Conway and Labbe each tallied goals as well before the end of the second period to give the Cadets a 6-1 lead after two periods.

Schwenzfeier tallied her 100th career point with her fifth goal of the season to cap the scoring on the night. Schwenzfeier scored at the 18:26 mark of the third period off an assist from Adrieana Rossini (Malden, Mass.) to become just the seventh player in program history to reach the 100-career-point milestone.

Schwenzfeier is the first to reach the 100-career-point milestone since 2015 when Kaycie Anderson '15 reached it. She joins Anderson, Sophie Leclerc '10, Julie Fortier '12, Amanda Wilks '12, Melissa Rundlett '12 and Jillayne DeBus '13 in the prestigious century club.

Senior goalie Laurie King (Waddington, N.Y.) stopped eight shots in 40 minutes to improve to 9-0-1 on the season. Freshman Emily Lambert (Riverview, Mich.) came on to make all four saves in the third period.

Norwich is next in action on Jan. 7 and 8 when it hosts the eighth annual East-West Hockey Classic at Kreitzberg Arena. This year's field will feature the current top four ranked teams in the country with No. 1 Norwich hosting No. 3 Plattsburgh at 2 p.m. and No. 2 Elmira taking on No. 4 Adrian at 5 p.m. in the other semifinal matchup on Sunday, Jan. 7. The winners will meet at 4 p.m. on Monday in the finals, while the losers will meet at 1 p.m. in the consolation game.
