Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's ice hockey team extended its league unbeaten streak to 37 straight games with a 4-1 win over Plymouth State University on Saturday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena.
Freshman forward Jessica Piracini (Tewksbury, Mass) scored her first collegiate goal and added another assist to lead the Cadets' offense in the victory as they won their fourth straight game.
Norwich struck first blood at the 6:17 mark of the first period with Piracini scoring her first career goal on a rebound off an initial shot from Christine Bouchat-Bonin (St.-Bernard-De-Lacolle, Quebec) to put the Cadets up 1-0.
The Cadets (4-2-0, 4-0-0 NEHC) extended their lead to 2-0 with freshman forward Bryn Labbe (Calgary, Alberta) notching her third goal of the season with a short-handed goal after NU was whistled for a five-minute major penalty.
Labbe intercepted a pass at the top of the slot and then roofed a backhand over the shoulder of Plymouth State goalie Emelie Lindqvist on the first shot she saw after replacing Alyssa Altschuler, who came out of the game after a collision with a NU player.
Plymouth State (2-4-0, 2-2-0 NEHC) cut into the deficit late in the second period with a 5-on-3 power play goal from Courtney Evans off an assist from Haley Branovan to cut the Cadets' lead down to 2-1 heading into the second intermission.
Evans blasted a one-timer slap shot from the left faceoff circle that beat NU junior goalie Celeste Robert (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) short side to the left post.
Norwich responded in the third period with two goals to get some breathing room and skate away for the victory. Sophomore forward Maki Shuchuk continued to celebrate her birthday weekend in style with a goal in back-to-back games off assists from Robyn Foley (Goulds, Newfoundland & Labrador) and Nicole Goebel (Swift Current, Saskatchewan).
Senior forward Rachel Bellio (Johnstown, Colo.) capped the scoring at the 12:17 mark of the third period with a power play goal off assists from Piracini and Taylor Cross (Saugus, Mass.)
Norwich outshot Plymouth 40-11 with both teams scoring a power play goal on the day.
Norwich continues its five-game home stand next weekend by hosting Salve Regina and Manhattanville on Friday and Saturday at 4 p.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.
