Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's ice hockey team fell 7-2 to Elmira College in the 2015 East-West Hockey Classic consolation game on Sunday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena.
Elmira freshman defenseman Kristin Chivers scored a goal and notched three assists for a four-point night to lead Elmira (1-1-0, 0-0-0 ECAC West) to hand the Cadets (0-2-0, 0-0-0 NEHC) their second straight defeat to open the season.
Senior Olivia Nystrom and sophomore Meghan Fonfara also added two goals and an assist each for the Soaring Eagles who picked up their third straight win over Norwich.
Norwich got goals from sophomore Sarah Schwenzfeier (Hingham, Mass.) and junior Adelle Murphy (Roseau, Minn.), but it wasn't enough as Elmira raced out to a 3-0 lead after the first period and never looked back.
Nystrom opened the scoring at the 5:58 mark with a snipe off the cross bar from the left faceoff dot that beat NU starting goalie Laurie King (Waddington, N.Y.) over her blocker to give Elmira a 1-0 lead. Kyra McDonald hit Nystrom with an outlet pass from the far blue line and then Nystrom did the rest with a quick wrist shot high.
Fonfara increased the lead to 2-0 less than two minutes later with a blast on the power play from the point that kissed off the right post and bounced into the back of the net to make it 2-0 Soaring Eagles.
Johanna Eidensten scored a short-handed goal on a 2-on-1 odd man rush after a misplay by a NU defender at the blue line. Eidensten got a pass from Nystrom at the left side of the goal and banged a shot home on her backhand to make it 3-0 Elmira.
Elmira increased the lead to 4-0 at the 5:52 mark of the second period with Chivers tallying her first career goal, beating NU's other goalie Celeste Robert (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) five-hole with a shot from the blue line. Anna Tude picked up the assist on the goal.
Norwich finally got on the board at the 11:46 mark of the second period with Schwenzfeier scoring on a partial breakaway off a feed from Georgia Leahy (Scituate, Mass.). Schwenzfeier took the outlet pass from Leahy and sped into the Elmira zone from the left wing. She fired a wrist shot far post that beat EC goaltender Kyle Nelson to cut the deficit to 4-1.
However, less than a minute later Elmira answered to make it 5-1 with Jessica Prance's first goal of the season off assists from Fonfara and Chivers.
Norwich cut into the deficit again at the 11:07 mark of the third period when senior defenseman Madison Gallagher (Kirkland, Quebec) hit Adelle Murphy with a home run pass at the far blue line to spring the junior forward on a breakaway. Murphy made no mistake with a wrist shot off the cross bar and into the back of the net to make it 5-2.
