Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team continued its recent dominance over Norwich, downing the Cadets 5-0 on Tuesday night at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena in non-conference action.
After a scoreless first period, Plattsburgh (13-0-2, 9-0-0 ECAC West) scored two times in the second period and three more in the third period en route to its fifth victory over the Cadets in the last six games.
Plattsburgh freshman Kayla Meneghin scored twice, while Melissa Sheeran, Shannon Stewart and Jordan Lipson each added goals as well for the No. 1-ranked Cardinals who stayed unbeaten on the season.
Norwich (10-3-2, 7-0-1 ECAC East) played Plattsburgh to a relatively even first 20 minutes, outshooting the Cardinals 8-5.
However, late in the second period Lipson finally broke the scoreless deadlock by jamming home a loose puck sitting right on the goal line next to the post to give the Cardinals the lead they would never relinquish. The goal was Lipson's fifth of the season off assists from Bridget Balisy and Shannon Stewart.
Just 40 seconds later, Plattsburgh added to its lead with a rebound goal in front of the crease by Sheeran to make it 2-0 Cardinals off an assist from Meneghin.
Plattsburgh continued to turn up the pressure in the third period, adding three more goals, including two by Meneghin to put the game away for good.
Stewart tallied her 12th goal of the season with a wrist shot from the top of the slot that beat NU sophomore goalie Celeste Robert (Rouyn Noranda, Quebec) low blocker side to make it 3-0 at the 4:16 mark of the period.
Meneghin capped the scoring with two unassisted goals, including a shorthanded goal for the fifth goal of the night and her team-leading 14th of the season at 9:08 and 16:32 of the final period.
Robert made 14 saves on 17 shots in 44:16 of action, while King stopped five shots on seven attempts in the remaining 15:44. The loss was Robert's first of the season, dropping her to 5-1-1 on the year. Plattsburgh's Camille Leonard improved to 7-0-0 on the season after making 15 saves.
Norwich returns to action on Friday night at 6 p.m. when the Cadets host Saint Michael's at Kreitzberg Arena.
