NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's ice hockey team defeated Castleton 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action.
Junior defensemen Taylor Cross (Saugus, Mass.) and Madison Gallagher (Kirkland, Quebec), as well as freshman defenseman Kim Tiberi (Raleigh, N.C.) all scored goals to lead the Norwich offense as the Cadets extended their league unbeaten streak to 24 straight games.
Freshman goalie Laurie King (Waddington, N.Y.) improved to 3-0-1, stopping 14 shots to pick up the victory in goal for Norwich. Castleton State senior Paula Stephens made 30 saves for the Spartans.
Norwich (10-2-2, 7-0-1 ECAC East) took a 1-0 lead just 2:48 into the game when Cross ripped a slap shot from the blue line off a faceoff win by freshman forward Sarah Schwenzfeier (Hingham, Mass.) that found its way through traffic in front of the net and past Stephens.
Castleton (8-7-1, 3-4-1 ECAC East) responded to tie the game at the 9:41 mark of the second period when Lisa Kilroy was in all alone and scored on a breakaway off assists from Emily Raber and Sabrina Hosner.
Kilroy deked and dragged the puck behind her to her right, momentarily losing it as she faked out King. However, Kilroy still had time to recover and flip the puck into the side of the net before King could scramble back to the post.
The Cadets took the lead for good at the 4:35 mark of the third period when Gallagher wristed a shot from the top of the right faceoff circle along the ice that beat Stephens to make it 2-1 Norwich. Senior forward Kaycie Anderson (Maple Plain, Minn.) picked up the assist on the goal after dropping the puck back to Gallagher from the slot.
Tiberi gave Norwich an insurance tally at the 14:20 mark of the third period with a hard slap shot from the point that deflected into the corner of the net and over Stephens shoulder to make it 3-1 Cadets. Senior forward Madyson Moore (Dubuque, Iowa) picked up the assist on the goal.
Norwich outshot Castleton 33-15, including a 13-1 advantage in the third period.
Norwich now faces a big test against the defending national champions and No. 1-ranked Plattsburgh on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
