Women's Hockey: Norwich shuts out Castleton 4-0 to finish off perfect ECAC East regular season

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's ice hockey team shut out Castleton 4-0 on Saturday afternoon to become the first team in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East history to finish with a perfect regular season record.

Norwich (21-3-0, 16-0-0 ECAC East) won its fourth straight ECAC East regular season title and will be the No. 1 seed for the ECAC East Tournament, which starts next Saturday, Feb. 22. The Cadets will face No. 8 New England College at 3 p.m. as they go for their sixth ECAC East Tournament title in the last seven years.

Norwich got goals from Adelle Murphy (Roseau, Minn.), Madyson Moore (Dubuque, Iowa), Tori Charron (Tecumseh, Ontario) and Elle Kadel (Fairbanks, Alaska) en route to the victory.

Murphy scored her fourth goal of the season when she banged home a loose rebound at the side of the net to give Norwich the lead for good. Senior forward Emily MacKinnon (Kirkland, Quebec) and Brittany Sharman (Ayer's Cliff, Quebec) each picked up assists on the goal.

Moore made it 2-0 at the 5:48 mark of the second period when she beat Castleton goalie Paula Stephens low blocker side on a pretty crossing feed from Nicolette Gosselin (Barre, Vt.). Senior defenseman Kayla Lascelle (Cornwall, Ontario) started the breakout with a chip off the boards in the defensive zone to spring Gosselin on the odd-man rush.

Charron tallied her 99th goal of her career and 23rd of the season with a tip-in goal off an initial shot by Sharman from the point. Sophomore forward Taylor Cross (Saugus, Mass.) picked up the second assist on the goal.

Kadel capped the scoring with her first goal of the season by tipping a shot from Kayla Parsons (Fairbanks, Alaska) past Stephens. Senior defenseman Marie-Philip Guay (Longueuil, Quebec) also had an assist on the goal.

Freshman goalie Celeste Robert (Rouyn Noranda, Quebec) made 11 saves to pick up the shut out and her third victory of the season. Stephens made 29 saves for Castleton.

Norwich will face No. 2 Middlebury on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a crucial non-conference matchup at Kreitzberg Arena.
