PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Norwich University women's ice hockey team opened the 2026-27 season by authoring a new chapter in one of the program's most storied non-conference rivalries, shutting out No. 11 Plattsburgh State University, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
Second-ranked Norwich received two goals from sophomore Geena Cookinham (Gilmanton, N.H.), while senior Payton Sutherland (Brighton, Colo.) turned aside all 24 shots she faced to help the Cadets secure their first win over the Cardinals since Dec. 9, 2023, and their first victory in Plattsburgh since Nov. 8, 2017.
The result carried even greater historical significance, marking Norwich's first shutout of Plattsburgh in the all-time series and the Cadets' largest margin of victory over the seven-time national champions.
Saturday's result also marked Norwich's first shutout of Plattsburgh in the history of the series and its largest margin of victory over the Cardinals.
The meeting brought together two programs responsible for nine NCAA Division III national championships, with Norwich owning titles from 2011 and 2018 and Plattsburgh having captured seven. Both programs also reached the NCAA Tournament last season, with the Cadets advancing to the national semifinals and the Cardinals appearing in the opening round.
Sutherland and the Norwich defense made sure the latest chapter belonged entirely to the maroon and gold.
Plattsburgh generated the game's first sustained pressure and finished the opening period with a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal, but Sutherland turned aside everything sent her way. The Cardinals came particularly close just under six minutes into the contest, when an attempt struck the pipe during an early sequence around the Norwich crease.
Norwich eventually received its first power-play opportunity when Plattsburgh was whistled for tripping at 12:12, and the Cadets made their lone chance with the skater advantage count.
Junior Alex Leslie (Irishtown, N.B.) helped work the puck to Cookinham, who found the back of the net at 14:05 to give Norwich a 1-0 advantage.
The Cadets carried the one-goal advantage into the first intermission despite Plattsburgh continuing to test Sutherland over the closing minutes.
Norwich flipped the territorial pressure in the second period, putting 10 shots on goal after producing four in the opening frame.
The Cadets doubled their lead with 2:56 remaining in the period.
After Ammons put an initial attempt on goal, senior Breanna Ricker (Laconia, N.H.) followed the play and buried Norwich's second goal at 17:04. Sophomore Madalyn Liles (Arlington, Texas) and senior Dani Ammons (Centennial, Colo.) earned the assists.
Norwich entered the final period protecting a 2-0 advantage, and Plattsburgh's best opportunities to alter the complexion of the game came on special teams.
The Cadets were called for three penalties during the third period alone, giving the Cardinals six minutes of power-play time while attempting to mount a comeback.
Sutherland and Norwich's penalty kill never broke.
Plattsburgh generated only two shots on goal across its five power-play opportunities for the afternoon, with Norwich successfully killing all 10 minutes of Cardinal man-advantage time. The Cadets also repeatedly stepped into shooting lanes, finishing the contest with 13 blocked shots.
That effort was particularly evident in the closing minutes.
With Norwich down a skater following a hooking penalty at 17:16, the Cadets blocked four Plattsburgh attempts during the ensuing sequence. Cookinham, Ammons, Natalie Heutmaker (Eagan, Minn.), and Ellin Rees (Cardiff, Wales, U.K.) all helped deny Cardinal opportunities as the clock wound toward the final minute.
Norwich then delivered the finishing blow at the opposite end.
With 58 seconds remaining, Cookinham struck for her second goal of the afternoon, converting shorthanded with Sutherland temporarily off the ice. Ammons picked up her second assist of the game while Heutmaker added a helper, extending Norwich's advantage to 3-0 and putting the historic road victory away.
Cookinham finished with the first multi-goal outing of Norwich's season, scoring on the power play in the first before adding the shorthanded insurance tally late in the third.
Ammons enjoyed an equally productive afternoon from the blue line, assisting on all three Norwich goals and finishing with two blocked shots. Ricker supplied the second-period game-winner, while Leslie, Liles, and Heutmaker each recorded an assist.
Sutherland handled the rest.
Making the start in goal, the senior stopped all 24 shots she faced across 58:53 to secure the shutout. She made 10 saves during Plattsburgh's first-period push, seven more in the second, and another seven in the third.
Plattsburgh finished with a 24-20 advantage in shots on goal and generated 55 total shot attempts compared with Norwich's 36, but the Cadets limited the Cardinals through a combination of Sutherland's goaltending and 13 blocked shots. Plattsburgh also sent 17 attempts wide and hit one pipe.
Special teams proved decisive. Norwich converted its only power-play opportunity while holding Plattsburgh scoreless on five chances, and Cookinham's late shorthanded goal gave the Cadets goals in all three situations: power play, even strength, and shorthanded.
The teams were nearly even in the faceoff circle, with Norwich holding a narrow 23-22 advantage. Freshman Vanessa Sciampacone (Nepean, Ontario) won eight of 11 draws for a 72.7-percent success rate, while junior Anna Lisac (Euclid, Ohio) also collected eight faceoff victories.
The victory represented another notable moment in a rivalry that stretches back more than 15 years. Norwich's previous wins in Plattsburgh came during the 2010 NCAA Quarterfinals, in January 2011, February 2012, and most recently in November 2017. Saturday's shutout gave the Cadets their seventh victory in the all-time series.
Norwich will now turn its attention to Little East Conference play and its first home games of the regular season.
The Cadets will welcome Keene State College to Kreitzberg Arena on Friday, Nov. 6, for a 6:00 p.m. contest before hosting Western Connecticut State University on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 3:00 p.m. The matchup with Western Connecticut State will mark the first meeting between the two programs.
Norwich will then return to the road the following weekend, traveling to Plymouth State University on Friday, Nov. 13, before visiting New England College on Saturday, Nov. 14.
