Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women's ice hockey team recorded its second straight shutout on the weekend, downing Plymouth State 4-0 on Saturday night at Kreitzberg Arena in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action.
Junior forward Madyson Moore (Dubuque, Iowa) scored twice, while senior forward Meghan Papagno (Wakefield, Mass.) and senior defenseman Marie-Philip Guay (Longueuil, Quebec).
In just her second game back in the lineup, Moore sparked the Cadets' offense with her sixth and seventh goals of the season and help Norwich (17-3-0, 12-0-0) win its eighth straight game.
Papagno kept her hot streak going with her fifth goal in the last four games to give Norwich a lead it would never relinquish at the 17:15 mark of the first period. Senior forward Haley Gibson (Richmond, Ontario) and junior forward Kaycie Anderson (Maple Plain, Minn.) each picked up assists on the goal.
Moore made it 2-0 at the 3:16 mark of the second period with a pretty redirection into the top left corner of the net off a shot from Taylor Cross (Saugus, Mass.) at the point. Gibson also notched her second assist of the game as well.
Guay increased the lead to 3-0 with a tremendous individual effort for her sixth goal of the season. Guay intercepted a pass just inside the blue line on the right wing. She dangled around two Plymouth State defenders and then sniped a wrist shot over the shoulder of PSU goalie Ali Ponte.
Moore capped the scoring with another superb individual effort, deking out Ponte and then sliding it in on her backhand to make it 4-0.
Norwich freshman goalie Celeste Robert (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec) picked up her second career win in her second start, stopping all four shots she faced. Ponte made 46 saves for Plymouth State.
With the victory, Norwich clinched its fourth straight top seed in the ECAC East Tournament. The Cadets take on Manhattanville at 7:30 p.m. next Friday.
