Baseball: Norwich Splits With Castleton to Pick Up First Win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CASTLETON, Vt. – Senior first baseman Seth Knihtila (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont Regional) applied a diving tag to first base to force out Castleton's Allen White with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning to preserve a 13-10 Cadet victory in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Spartan Field Sunday, March 25. The Spartans (5-8) took game one 10-2.

Norwich (1-12) used a seven-run rally in the fourth inning of the second game to erase a 7-4 deficit and take a 11-7 lead. Six different players had RBI hits for the Maroon and Gold in the frame, including back-to-back doubles by junior designated hitter Dustin Shimkus (Collinsville, Ill./Metro East Lutheran) and sophomore centerfielder Charles Schaub (East Hampton, Conn./East Hampton).

Junior second baseman J.J. Losco (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield) went 3-for-5 with a double and four RBIs to lead Norwich's offense. Classmate Stephen Beardsley (Olney, Md./Washington Christian) added a 2-for-3 effort and a RBI.

Sophomore Scott Yashinski (1-0) picked up the win for the Cadets, working two-plus innings in middle relief. The Kintnersville, Pa., native allowed two runs on three hits while walking four. Brandon Fay took the loss for Castleton to fall to 1-2.

Norwich did not commit an error in the game for the first time this season.

Dakota Aker controlled the opener on the mound for CSC, going all seven innings while allowing only two hits and two unearned runs. The right-hander struck out eight and walked five.

White went 3-for-3 with four RBIs to pace the Spartans in game one. Peter Wagner and Matthew McNamee both contributed 2-for-3 performances.

Sophomores Devin Cilley (Tunbridge, Vt./South Royalton) and Nicholas Gendron (Alstead, N.H./Vermont Academy) had the two Norwich hits. NU stranded six runners to Castleton's one.

Junior pitcher Jonathan Philbrook (Rochester, Mass./Old Colony) fell to 0-2 for the Cadets.

Norwich travels to Plattsburgh, N.Y., Tuesday, March 27, to tangle with Plattsburgh State. The non-conference game is set to start at 3 p.m.
