Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Fit to be tied.
For the second straight day the top-ranked Norwich University women's hockey team came away with a tie after second-ranked Plattsburgh State rallied to score two third period goals and erase a 2-0 deficit to steal a point on Sunday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena in the third annual East/West Hockey Classic finale.
The last time the Cadets (0-0-2) failed to record a victory on a two-game weekend was December 2009.
Norwich was nearly flawless in the first two periods, dominating the shots 20-7 after 40 minutes, as well as building a 2-0 lead with goals from junior defenseman Marie-Philip Guay (Longueuil, Quebec) and freshman forward Alison Greene (Massena, N.Y.).
However, Plattsburgh, who returned nine of their top 10 scorers from last year's squad that finished third in the NCAA Tournament, scored two goals 3:14 apart in the third period by senior forwards Teal Gove and Jordan Caldwell to draw even.
After a scoreless first period, Guay got Norwich on the board just before the halfway point of the game by ripping a slap shot from the point that Plattsburgh senior goalie Sydney Aveson got a piece of but couldn't hold onto allowing the puck to trickle over the goal line and make it 1-0 Cadets.
Sophomore forward Kaycie Anderson (Maple Plain, Minn.) and junior forward Tori Charron (Tecumseh, Ontario) recorded assists on the goal.
Norwich extended its lead to 2-0 with exactly one minute left in the second stanza when Greene notched her first collegiate regular season goal by roofing the puck over Aveson after a mad scramble in front of the net. Aveson made an initial save on Charron on the doorstep but Greene scooped up the puck, turned and wristed the shot over a sprawled out Aveson. Junior defenseman Kayla Lascelle (Cornwall, Ontario) also picked up an assist on the goal.
Plattsburgh finally solved Norwich sophomore goalie Loren Carrier (Chandler, Ariz.) at the 9:30 mark of the third period when Gove slammed home a pass on the doorstep of the crease from Jenny Kistner on the power play to cut the Norwich lead to 2-1.
The Cardinals kept feeding off the new found momentum and a little over three minutes later Caldwell knotted the game up by walking out from behind the net unmarked and sliding the puck near side past Carrier before the NU goalie could get her pad to the post. Breanne Bennett picked up the assist on the goal.
Neither side was able to notch the winner through the remainder of regulation or the five-minute overtime session. Norwich outshot 28-17. Plattsburgh finished 1-for-4 on the power play while Norwich was 0-for-1.
Carrier made 15 saves for Norwich and was named to the All-Tournament Team while Aveson picked up Most Valuable Player honors after stopping 26 shots for the Cardinals. Gove and Kistner were also named to the All-Tournament team for Plattsburgh. Norwich's Guay, Elmira's Olivia Nystrom and Manhattanville's Katie Little rounded out the 2012 East/West Hockey Classic All-Tournament squad.
Sunday afternoon's game also marked the third time that Norwich sophomore forward Tyne Gove went head to head with her older sister Teal, who is a senior forward on Plattsburgh. So far, the younger sibling is still unbeaten against her older sister with Norwich holding a 2-0-1 record in the three meetings. The two sisters will meet again when Norwich travels across Lake Champlain to Plattsburgh on Sunday, Jan. 6 to open up the second semester of the season.
