Box Score MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – For the second straight year the Norwich women's ice hockey team was stymied by Salve Regina as the two sides skated to a 1-1 tie on Saturday night at St. George's Rink in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action.
Despite outshooting Salve Regina 57-8, the Cadets (7-1-1, 6-0-1 ECAC East) only managed to put one puck past the Seahawks' senior goalie Rebecca Simmons.
Rachel Porter gave Salve Regina a 1-0 lead in the opening minute of the second period when she intercepted a pass in the Norwich zone and then worked a give and go with Michaela Chiuccariello before beating NU goaltender Joanie Plamondon (Pont-Rogue, Quebec).
Norwich finally broke through midway through the third period as Julie Fortier (Saint-Malachie, Quebec) tallied her 10th goal of the season unassisted to level the score at one. Fortier's goal was the 72nd of her career, which ties her with Sophie Leclerc for the all-time program record for goals in a career.
Plamondon recorded seven saves for Norwich and earned the tie to bring her record to 3-1-1 on the year.
Saturday's game was nearly an exact replica of last year's game which saw Norwich outshoot Salve Regina 42-11. However, buoyed by 41 saves from Simmons, the Seahawks earned the draw.
Norwich stretched its ECAC East regular season unbeaten streak to 28 games. The Cadets are 26-0-2 over that span with the only two blemishes coming to Salve Regina.
The Cadets will try to regroup on Sunday afternoon when they battle Holy Cross in a showdown for first place in the ECAC East standings. The Division I Crusaders are a perfect 6-0-0 in league play and 9-0-1 overall.
