RUTLAND, Vt. – After briefly falling behind 1-0, the Norwich women's hockey team scored eight unanswered goals to rout Castleton 8-1 on Saturday night at Spartan Arena in ECAC East action.
Junior forward Julie Fortier notched the 100th point of her career and gave NU (14-3-1, 11-0-1 ECAC East) its first lead of the night at the 10:08 mark of the first period off assists from Melissa Rundlett and Renee Lortie to make it 2-1.
With the goal, she became just the second player in program history to reach the 100-point milestone.
Sophie Leclerc had tied the game at one at the 6:40 mark of the period and then added tallies in the second and third period to complete her hat trick and bring her season goal total up to 18.
Meghan Papagno scored her first career goal to give the Cadets a 3-1 lead at the 14:26 mark of the first period with assists from Leclerc and Jillayne DeBus.
Fortier added her second of the game to increase the lead to 4-1 at the 7:56 mark of the second period off an assist from Lortie.
Sarah Scardino and Sarianne Lynn each added a goal to round out the Norwich goal scorers on the night.
Leclerc led all scorers with three goals and an assist, while Debus and Papagno each had three points as well.
Freshman goalie Joanie Plamondon picked up the victory in between the pipes for Norwich, setting aside seven shots and improving to 3-1-1 on the season. Amanda Hoy took the loss for Castleton after making 38 saves.
The Cadets outshot Castleton 46-8 and now have a five-point lead on Manhattanville after the Valiants dropped their second straight league game with a 2-1 loss to UMass-Boston.
Norwich returns to action on Wednesday night when the Cadets host Plymouth State at Kreitzberg Arena at 7 p.m.
