Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich women's hockey team
did just about everything right on Friday night in a battle against
No. 2-ranked Plattsburgh, except for solve Plattsburgh goalie
Mandy Mackrell.
The senior goalie was outstanding, making 41 saves to lead
Plattsburgh to a 4-2 win over the Cadets in non-conference action
at Kreitzberg Arena.
Norwich (7-2-0, 6-0-0 ECAC East) dominated the possession
throughout and outshot the Cardinals 43-12, but the Cadets were
unable to solve Mackrell until the third period when they were
already trailing 3-0.
Plattsburgh (6-0-0, 4-0-0 ECAC West) opened the scoring just
3:25 into the game as the Cardinals' Kylie
Klassen capitalized on a power play opportunity.
Klassen deflected a shot from Allison Era at
the point between Norwich senior goalie Cindy
Fortin's legs and into the back of the net to give
Plattsburgh a 1-0 lead.
Plattsburgh added to its lead at the 10:10 mark of the first
when Monica Korzon won a faceoff and then took a
shot directly off it. The quick shot caught Fortin off guard and
beat her low to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead.
Norwich coach Mark Bolding pulled Fortin to start the second
period to try and spark his team and it worked as Norwich hemmed
Plattsburgh into its defensive zone even more in the second period,
but the Cadets still couldn't put a puck past Mackrell.
Plattsburgh's Steph Moon added the
back-breaker at the 14:30 mark with a shorthanded goal to push the
lead to 3-0.
Moon outskated Norwich defenseman Sarianne Lynn
to a clearing attempt from Era. With Lynn draped all over her back,
Moon was able to roof a shot top-shelf past Kelly
Fisk for the third Cardinal goal.
Norwich finally solved Mackrell 23 seconds into the third period
when junior forward Melissa Rundlett slapped home
a loose rebound that Mackrell couldn't recover from in time
to cut the deficit to 3-1. Sophie Leclerc and
Jillayne DeBus picked up the assists.
But, Moon tallied her second goal of the game and fourth of the
season at the 13:58 mark on a power play to give Plattsburgh its
three-goal lead back.
Freshman defenseman Kayla Parsons tallied her
first collegiate goal with nine seconds remaining on a slap shot
from the point through traffic. Parsons received a pass from
Leclerc below the circles and then ripped a shot low that kissed
off the far post and into the back of the net.
Mackrell, an All-American from a year ago, improved to 5-0-0 and
has given up just three goals so far this year.
Fortin made one save for Norwich in 20 minutes of action. Fisk
made seven stops and was saddled with the loss.
Plattsburgh was 2-for-6 on the power play, while Norwich was
1-for-4.
Norwich returns next weekend when the Cadets travel Trinity on
Friday to take on the Bantams. They return home on Sunday to take
on the two-time defending national champions Amherst Lady Jeffs at
3 p.m.
