HARTFORD, Conn. – Trinity's Alexa
Guglielmi broke a 1-1 tie with 7:53 remaining in the third
period to lift the Bantams to a 2-1 non-conference win over Norwich
on Friday night at Williams Rink at the Koeppel Community Sports
Center.
Guglielmi redirected a shot from Kim Weiss at
the point past Norwich freshman goalie Joanie
Plamondon to give Trinity (4-1-1, 2-1-1 NESCAC) its first
and only lead it would need on a power play after Kayla
Parsons took a penalty for NU.
After a scoreless first period, Norwich senior captain
Sophie Leclerc needed just 2:08 to give the Cadets
a 1-0 lead with a wrist shot into the top-right corner of the goal
and over the shoulder of Trinity goaltender Alexa
Pujol. The unassisted power-play goal was Leclerc's
team-leading ninth of the season and increased her season point
total to 19.
Norwich (7-3-0, 6-0-0 ECAC East) continued to keep the pressure
on throughout the second period, outshooting the Bantams 17-2,
however the Cadets were never able to increase their lead despite
the large shot advantage and two more power play opportunities
After having three golden scoring opportunities in the first
period, Trinity's junior sparkplug Celia
Colman-McGaw finally converted just 43 seconds into the
third period. Weiss once again hurt the Cadets as she found
Colman-McGaw skating up the wing alone after a Norwich defenseman
was caught pinching up.
Weiss' pass was right on the tape of Colman-McGaw and she
did the rest by deking Plamondon and then with a diving head-first
full extension lunge, slid the puck past Plamondon before knocking
the net off the moorings to tie the game at one.
Norwich could never muster any significant offense or chances to
find the equalizer, even after pulling Plamondon for the
extra-attacker.
Plamondon made 22 stops to pick up her first loss of the season,
while Pujol recorded 36 saves for Trinity to earn the win.
Norwich will try to break its two-game skid on Sunday when the
Cadets return to the friendly confines of Kreitzberg Arena to close
out the first semester schedule with a non-conference matchup
against two-time defending national champion Amherst at 3 p.m.
