Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich women's hockey
used a four-goal second period to pull away from UMass-Boston as
the Cadets topped the Beacons 5-1 in ECAC East action on Saturday
afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena.
UMass-Boston junior goaltender Leah Hallett was
nearly unbeatable in the first period as Norwich (6-1-0, 5-0-0 ECAC
East) threw 26 shots at her and only managed to come away with one
goal.
Sophomore F Jillayne DeBus finally solved
Hallett at the 17:25 mark on the power play off a feed from
Sarianne Lynn from the point. DeBus received the
pass between the goal line and the bottom of the circle and then
skated in on Hallett. DeBus skated across the top of
Hallett's goal crease and then beat her high and glove side
to give the Cadets a 1-0 lead.
In the second period though, the floodgates opened up as Norwich
pumped four goals past Hallett to put the game away.
Sophie Leclerc scored her team-leading eighth
goal of the season to put Norwich up 2-0 at the 4:27 mark. DeBus
and a UMass-Boston player got tied up along the boards and both
fell to the ice. Leclerc swooped in and walked out from behind the
net and then beat Hallett five-hole on the back hand.
A little less than five minutes later, Lynn recorded her
first goal of the season off a textbook faceoff goal. Julie
Fortier won the draw back to Brittany
Sharman, who went D-to-D with a pass to Lynn. Lynn
corralled the puck and slapped a shot past Hallett before she could
set up to give the Cadets a 3-0 lead.
DeBus tallied her second goal of the game and sixth of the
season off a feed from Leclerc at the 15:45 mark of the period to
stretch the lead to 4-0.
Less than a minute later, Jacqueline Perez
capped the scoring for Norwich with her third goal of the season,
beating Hallett five-hole off an assist from Marie-Philip
Guay to push the lead to 5-0.
UMass-Boston (2-4-0, 2-4-0 ECAC East) got on the board in the
last minute of the second period when Katie Kirwan
capitalized on a breakaway to cut the lead to 5-1.
Sarahanne Cavolo and Hallett picked up the
assists.
Cindy Fortin improved to 4-1 on the season,
setting aside seven shots in two periods of play. Kelly
Fisk played the final period and made one stop for the
Cadets.
Hallett made 53 saves for UMass-Boston and dropped to 2-3 on the
season.
Norwich continued its hot streak on the power play going
2-for-4, while UMass-Boston was 1-for-3.
The Cadets outshot UMass-Boston 58-9.
