NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Melanie Sherlock scored a
pair of goals, including the game-tying marker at 14:50 of the
third period, as Salve Regina overcame a 4-1 deficit to earn a 4-4
tie with Norwich in an ECAC East women's ice hockey game Friday
evening at Kreitzberg Arena.
Sherlock's second goal, which came on the power play, was
assisted by Shannon Ellis and Kendra Andrie. The marker capped a
furious rally that saw the Seahawks score three times in a span of
7:27 in the third period.
Sarah McCusker started the uprising when she scored off a feed
from Kathleen Roche at the 7:23 mark. The even-strength tally made
it 4-2, but Norwich still seemed to be very much in command of the
game. Then, less than four minutes later, Andrie scored a power
play goal off an assist from Ellis to trim Salve Regina's deficit
to 4-3 at the 11:03 mark. Sherlock then netted the equalizer,
forcing Norwich to call a timeout and regroup.
The Seahawks (7-2-2, 6-1-2 ECAC East) enjoyed a pair of power
play opportunities in the overtime session, but they were unable to
push across the game-winning goal and they settled for the tie.
Norwich (8-1-2, 7-1-2 ECAC East) got two goals and an assist
from sophomore F Julie Fortier as the Cadets built a 4-1 lead early
in the third period. Sophomore F Melissa Rundlett chipped in a goal
and two assist for Norwich, which is 1-1-2 over its last four games
after starting the season 7-0-0.
Norwich controlled the play in the first period, outshooting
Salve Regina by a margin of 13-5. The Cadets were unable to get
anything behind Seahawks' G Rebecca Simmons, though, and the teams
went into the first intermission in a scoreless deadlock.
The Cadets opened the scoring early in the second period when
junior F Kelsey Cone tallied her sixth goal of the season off
assists from Fortier and Rundlett just 55 seconds into the stanza.
Rundlett started the play when she slid a pass to Fortier in the
left-hand corner. Fortier then rifled a pass to Cone, who was out
in front of the net and beat Simmons from close range.
Salve Regina answered just six seconds later as the Seahawks won
the faceoff and Sherlock skated in all alone on Norwich junior G
Cindy Fortin. Fortin had little chance on the play as Sherlock
flipped a shot into the upper corner of the net to tied the score
at 1-1 at the 1:01 mark.
Norwich moved in front 2-1 midway through the second period when
Fortier scored at the 10:56 mark. The second-year performer picked
up the puck in the Cadets' zone and skated around a couple of
defenders before flipping it past Simmons.
The Cadets extended their lead to 3-1 with just 29 seconds
remaining in the second period when Rundlett scored on a rebound.
The goal, which was Rundlett's fourth of the season, was assisted
by sophomore F Felicia Desorcie and senior F Sophie Leclerc.
Norwich outshot Salve Regina 21-5 in the second period, as the
Cadets continued to dominate the play.
NU seemed to put the game away early in the third period when
Fortier scored her second goal of the game - and team-leading 10th
of the season - off assists from freshman F Courtney Parisot and
Rundlett just 1:36 into the stanza. But the Cadets seemed to let up
just a little bit, and the Seahawks took full advantage.
For the game, Norwich held a commanding 46-19 edge in shots.
Simmons stopped 42 on the night for the Seahawks, while Fortin made
15 saves for the Cadets.
Norwich was 1-for-6 on the power play, while Salve Regina went
2-for-6.
Norwich will close out its weekend series on Saturday, Jan. 9,
when the Cadets host ECAC East rival Southern Maine at Kreitzberg
Arena. The opening faceoff for the conference clash is slated for 3
p.m.
