PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Kate Fairfield scored
twice, and Megan DiJulio added two goals and an assist to lead No.
2-ranked Plattsburgh State past Norwich, 7-2, in a non-conference
women's ice hockey contest Tuesday evening at Stafford Ice Arena.
Laurie Bowler added three assists for the Cardinals, who improve
to 13-1-1 on the season.
Norwich (11-3-3) opened the scoring at the 9:54 mark of the
first period when junior F Kelsey Cone scored a power play goal.
Sophomore D Sarianne Lynn picked up an assist on the marker, which
was Cone's seventh of the season.
Plattsburgh tied the game at 13:09 of the first period when
Steph Moon scored an even-strength goal off assists from Bowler and
DiJulio. The Cardinals then struck again 21 seconds later as Kayla
McDougall scored off a feed from Erika Shaubel at the 13:30 mark.
DiJulio capped the first period scoring when she netted her first
tally of the game off assists from Moon and Bowler with just 28
seconds to play in the stanza. Plattsburgh outshot Norwich 13-3 in
the frame, and the Cardinals carried their 3-1 lead into the first
intermission.
Norwich played Plattsburgh even in the second period as each
team scored a goal. The Cardinals extended their lead to 4-1 at the
5:12 mark when DiJulio struck again off feeds from Bowler and Erica
Pomponio. The Cadets then made it 4-2 at 10:52 of the second period
when sophomore F Melissa Rundlett potted a power play goal. Senior
F Sophie Leclerc and sophomore F Julie Fortier were credited with
assists on the goal, which was Rundlett's sixth of the year. NU
outshot Plattsburgh 9-8 in the period.
Plattsburgh put the game away in the third period as the
Cardinals scored three more goals. The Cadets were outshot 18-3 in
the final 20 minutes. Fairfield scored both of her goals in the
third period, and Helen Giroux added a marker of her own to close
out the scoring.
Mandy Mackrell made 13 saves to earn the win between the pipes
for Plattsburgh. Norwich junior G Cindy Fortin stopped 32 shots in
the loss for the Cadets.
For the game, Plattsburgh held a commanding 39-15 edge in shots.
Norwich had its power play working this evening, converting 2-of-3
opportunities. Plattsburgh, meanwhile, was 0-for-2 on the
man-advantage.
Norwich will return to its ECAC East schedule on Friday, Jan.
29, when the Cadets host St. Michael's College at Kreitzberg Arena
at 7 p.m.
