NORTHFIELD, Vt. - After two scoreless periods
at Kreitzberg Arena, the Norwich University women's ice hockey team
broke out with a four-goal onslaught in the third period to break
the deadlock in a 4-1 win over New England College in an ECAC East
clash.
The Cadets used four unanswered goals to gain a commanding lead,
but saw the Pilgrims score a late power play goal to spoil the
shutout bid.
With the win the Cadets stay undefeated on the season, moving
their record 5-0-0 (4-0-0 ECAC). The Pilgrims drop their first
game, falling to 3-1-0 (2-1-0 ECAC).
Norwich scored 3:07 into the third period to get the offense
going when senior F Sophie Leclerc found the back of the net on the
power play off assists from junior F Sarah Scardino and freshman D
Caitie Banfield.
Freshman D Brittany Casey netted her first career goal exactly a
minute later to push the Norwich lead to 2-0. The marker would
prove to be the game winner.
The Cadets ran their advantage to 3-0 when Scardino deflected a
Casey shot into the goal. Junior D Emily Goff also had an assist,
leading a nice pass over to Casey at the left point. The
tally came with 2:36 to go in the contest.
Banfield rounded out the Norwich scoring with a shorthanded goal
on a beautiful individual effort. She intercepted a pass and broke
in all alone on Pilgrim goalie Teraysa White, before using her
backhand to place the puck in the top corner with 31 seconds to go.
NEC broke up Norwich sophomore G Chiara Traversa's shutout try
when the puck trickled across the goal line on the man-advantage
with only 11 seconds remaining in the game. Stephanie Spera
scored the goal off a scramble in front of the net. Courtney
Kerslak was credited with an assist on the play.
NU outshot NEC 35-19 for the afternoon. Traversa stopped 18
shots in picking up the win. White turned away 31 shots for the
Pilgrims in the loss.
Norwich will continue its six-game homestand next weekend (Nov.
20-21), when the Cadets host ECAC East foes UMass-Boston and
Nichols College at Kreitzberg Arena.
