NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Liz Radigan netted a hat
trick, and Kristie Pageau scored a goal to help lead Plattsburgh
State past Norwich, 4-2, in a non-league women's soccer match at a
rainy and slick Howard Field Wednesday afternoon.
The outcome spoiled an impressive performance by Norwich junior
GK Nicki Hunsicker, who made a career-high 18 saves to keep the
Cadets close throughout the game.
Plattsburgh State (10-5-3) jumped on top 1-0 in the eighth
minute when Pageau took a crossing pass from Lindsey Keyser and
scored from close range. Less than three minutes later, Pageau was
taken down in the box and Radigan converted the ensuing penalty
kick to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead at the 10:10 mark.
Norwich (8-9-1) got back in the game in the 32nd minute when
freshman F Brittany Casey scored off an assist from junior F Nikki
Szczepanski to trim the Cadets' deficit to 2-1.
Plattsburgh State extended its advantage to 3-1 in the closing
moments of the first half when Radigan took a feed from Danielle
Wiemer and scored. The play started when Wiemer took a shot that
was saved by Hunsicker. The rebound bounced right back to Wiemer,
who passed it over to Radigan for the goal.
Casey scored her second goal of the game when she blasted a
corner kick into the top right-hand corner of the net to slice
Plattsburgh State's lead to 3-2 in the 59th minute.
The Cadets enjoyed several quality scoring chances over the
game's final 30 minutes, but they were unable to tally the
equilizing goal. The Cardinals capped the scoring in the final
minute when Radigan settled the ball in the penalty area and beat
Hunsicker to complete her hat trick.
Plattsburgh outshot Norwich, 36-9, in the game. The Cardinals
held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Alina Greiser made two saves en route to the victory in the PSU
goal.
Norwich will now have to wait to see if it qualifies for the
Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament. The Cadets
are currently in eighth place in the league standings, but they
need Johnson & Wales to either lose or tie against Lasell on
Thursday evening to hold onto that spot. Should the Cadets qualify
for the tournament as the No. 8 seed, they would travel to
Standish, Maine, on Sunday, Nov. 1, to play top-seeded St. Joseph's
(Maine).
