NEW LONDON, Conn. - Kelsey Cone scored the
game-winning goal just 1:03 into overtime to lift the Norwich
University women's ice hockey team to a 4-3 victory over
Connecticut College in a non-league contest Tuesday evening.
The Cadets (5-5-0) rallied from a 3-1 third period deficit to
force the extra session, scoring a pair of power play goals in the
final frame.
Connecticut College (1-5-1) opened the scoring at 3:16 of the
first period when Brigid O'Gorman scored a power play marker. The
Camels outshot Norwich, 13-10, in the first period and the score
remained 1-0 at the end of the opening 20 minutes.
The Camels doubled their lead midway through the second period
when Lauren Possillico scored an even strength goal at the 7:36
mark. Norwich got on the board late in the second period when
Sophie Leclerc potted a power play tally off an assist from Julie
Fortier at the 18:15 mark. Connecticut College dominated the
period, outshooting Norwich, 16-9, in the stanza.
Connecticut College reclaimed its two-goal lead at 3:49 of the
third period when Celia Medeiros scored a power play goal. The
Camels appeared to be in control of the game at that point, but the
Cadets scored a pair of power play goals of their own in the next
1:50 to tie the score. Amanda Wilks made it 3-2 when she scored an
unassisted goal at the 4:00 mark. Then, Melissa Rundlett tied it up
when she scored off assists from Cone and Katie Leupp at the 5:39
mark.
Neither team was able to push across the game winner in
regulation, and the game headed to overtime, where Cone scored on
the only shot of the extra session.
For the game, Connecticut College outshot Norwich, 43-28. Both
teams' power plays were cranked up as the Cadets went 4-for-6 on
the man advantage and the Camels went 2-for-5 with the extra
attacker.
Cindy Fortin stopped 40 shots in the NU goal to earn the win
between the pipes for the Cadets. Connecticut College goaltender
Sara Christopher made 24 saves in the loss.
Norwich will return to the friendly confines of Kreitzberg Arena
on Saturday, Jan. 10, when the Cadets host ECAC East powerhouse
Manhattanville at 7 p.m.
