NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University
men's soccer team extended its season-opening win streak to four
straight on Wednesday afternoon, defeating 22nd-ranked Plattsburgh
State, 3-1, at Howard Field. The Cadets tallied all three of their
goals after halftime en route to the victory.
After a scoreless first half, Norwich (4-0-0) got on the board
in the 57th minute when Jon Amell scored off an assist from Drew
Dilley at the 56:52 mark. Dilley started the play when he burst
into the Plattsburgh end and had his shot turned aside by the
Plattsburgh goalkeeper. Dilley persisted, though, and the senior
forward corralled the rebound and deftly fed the ball in front of
the net to Amell, who buried it.
Less than 10 minutes later, Plattsburgh State (4-1-0) tied the
score as Pat Shaughnessy scored off an assist from Nolan Ryan at
the 66:13 mark.
The Cadets responded with two goals in a span of 45 seconds to
seize control of the contest. Dilley scored what proved to be the
game-winning goal at the 78:40 mark, and then Jason Bliss tallied
an insurance marker at the 79:25 mark.
Dilley's goal came after Chris Rivet served the ball in front of
the net off a corner kick. Kyle Przekaza deflected the
ball over to Dilley, who put it past the Plattsburgh
goalkeeper for the go-ahead tally. Bliss' goal, which gave NU a
little bit of breathing room, came off of a nice feed from Ryan
Boyton.
Norwich outshot Plattsburgh, 16-14, and each team had four
corner kicks in the contest.
"This year's seniors had never beaten Plattsburgh, and I know
that it was a big goal for them coming into the season," said
Norwich head coach Kyle Dezotell. "Plattsburgh State is a very good
team, and I could not be prouder of our guys for how they performed
today. Beating the 22nd-ranked team in the country is a great
accomplishment.
"I want to thank all of the fans who came out to support us
today," added Dezotell. "I think they gave us a tremendous
homefield advantage. This win gives us a great deal of confidence
and momentum as we head into conference play this weekend."
Norwich opens its GNAC schedule on Saturday, Sept. 13, when the
Cadets host 2007 conference tournament champion Johnson & Wales
at Howard Field at 1 p.m.
