NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Danika Williams scored a
power play goal 2:19 into overtime to lift Salve Regina to a
2-1 victory over Norwich in an ECAC East women's ice hockey
quarterfinal game Saturday afternoon at Kreitzberg Arena.
The fifth-seeded Seahawks (11-13-2) move into the ECAC East
semifinals, where they will face No. 1 seed Manhattanville next
weekend. The fourth seeded Cadets see their inaugural varsity
season come to an end with a very respectable overall record of
12-10-2.
Salve Regina opened the scoring at the 4:43 mark of the first
period when Molly Golden netted a power play goal to put the
Seahawks on top, 1-0. The marker, Golden's 13th of the season, came
off a feed from Caitlin Campbell. Campbell had the puck behind the
net, and threw it in front to Golden, who snapped a quick shot past
Norwich goaltender Cindy Fortin.
Norwich knotted the score at 1-1 midway through the second
period when Sophie Leclerc tallied a power play goal at the 11:21
mark. The goal, which was Leclerc's team-leading 13th of the
season, came off an assist from freshman forward Kelsey Cone. Cone
started the play when her shot went wide and came right to Leclerc
at the left point. The junior forward wasted no time blasting the
puck toward the net, and after it deflected off a Salve Regina
defender, it snuck past Seahawks' goalie Lauren Barella.
Neither team was able to score in the third period, despite
several quality chances. Norwich outshot Salve Regina, 13-5, in the
stanza, but the Cadets were unable to push anything across. NU
goalie Cindy Fortin made a couple of tremendous saves to keep the
score tied.
The Cadets took two penalties early in the overtime, and the
Seahawks were able to convert on the five-on-three situation to
score the game-winning goal.
Norwich outshot Salve Regina, 25-19, for the game. Fortin took
the loss for the Cadets, despite 17 big saves. Barella made 24
saves en route to the victory.
